This document provides instructions for a group case analysis assignment. Students are to split into groups of 3, analyze a case using the 5 steps process, and submit their analysis by the end of class. The case involves an engineer, Mr. A, who is preparing an interim report for a town but may not meet deadlines due to family commitments. His supervisor suggests copying an analysis from a previous similar report, but this could violate ethical duties of being truthful and accurate in his work.

Situation 1. Reprocessed Results and Explanations
Mr. A (Eng.) works for an engineering consulting firm, Company Z, which specializes in waste water management. Company Z recently finished work for the small town of Katmandu and has now been contracted to do work for another town, Los Banos, in an adjoining municipality where the general environment, soil conditions, and waste water management options are similar. As part of Mr. A's responsibilities, he will have to produce an interim report outlining the environmental analysis and proposed solutions for the town of Los Banos . Mr. A knows that he has some important family commitments around the time of the scheduled interim report and as a result he may have a difficult time meeting his family commitments and meeting the report deadline. Mr. A's supervisor suggests that, since Company Z prepared the report for San Antonio, and the analysis of the Los Banos’ conditions are likely to be similar, Mr. A could save time to help meet the deadline by copying the field data and analysis of the San Antonio report into the Los Banos report. What should Mr. A do? Answer the following questions: What is the ethical dilemma for the Engineer? Which duties of the Engineer are in conflict? What is a reasonable decision and course of action? What is a similar situation that students might face? Why should professional engineers be required to abide by a code of ethics?
