QUALITATIVE RESEARCHERS TECHNIQUES- APPLICATION IN PUBLIC HEALTH

1. Background
2. Qualitative research methodology enables researchers to explore social and
behavioural issues related to public health that are not achievable with quantitative
methods. Qualitative research explores people’s stories and lived experiences to help
us in understanding their perceptions, motivations and behavior. It uses personalized
research methods such as interviews, focus groups and observation to help us view
the world from another’s perspective. While studies that ask the question ‘‘how
many’’ or ‘‘how much’’ require a quantitative approach, qualitative studies usually
ask the questions, ‘‘what’’, ‘‘how’’ or ‘‘why’’ of a phenomenon.Qualitative research
methods are gaining in popularity outside the traditional academic social sciences, in
public health and international development research. In this backdrop, the
professionals in the fieldsneed to update their knowledge and skill. Therefore, the
capacity building training endeavour of OSSRC is a humble and noble step in
this direction.
