Practical No.

Aim: To calculate the maximum capacity of LAN connection used in monitoring the workstation

Problem Statement: A network administrator wishes to monitor 5000 workstations to see whether
they are switched on or not. In order to do this each machine is periodically pinged. The message
size in both directions is 180 bytes. Consider 20 bytes of IP overhead. The administrator’s NMS
(network management station) is on a 10 Mbps 802.3 switched LAN operating in half-duplex. If
each machine is pinged every 50 seconds determine the maximum percentage of the capacity of the
LAN connection that is being used in monitoring the workstations.

Procedure
1] Using scilab coding calculate the maximum capctity of LAN used in monitoring the workstation
neglecting interframe gap of LAN.

2] Vary the number of workstation from 1000 to 20,000 and calculate the % of time used in
monitoring the workstation. Plot a graph of % of time monitoring the workstation Vs number of
workstations.

3] Vary the frequency of pinging from from 10s to 100s and calculate the % of time used in
monitoring the workstation. Plot a graph of % of time monitoring the workstation Vs frequency of
pinging.
