P 404: RESEARCH APTITUDE AND DATA ANALYSIS
SEMESTER IV
(As Approved in the BOS meeting held on 15th NOVEMBER 2019 for the acad. Year 2019-20)

UNIT – I 15Hrs
Research Aptitude: Scientific method, Research techniques, Experimental and theoretical
techniques, Research Problem, research design, Literature survey, impact and usefulness of
research problem, Role of research guide, Preparation of scientific reports: Synopsis,
dissertation, report, thesis, Power point presentation, poster, publication, proceedings. Ethics in
research.

UNIT – II 15Hrs
Material Characterization data analysis: XRD data analysis, Microscopic techniques: Data
analysis of SEM, TEM, AFM, Data analysis of Spectroscopic techniques: UV, FTIR, RAMAN,
Data analysis of Macroscopic techniques: DTA, DSC, TGA, Cole-Cole plots, Hysteresis, DLS.

UNIT – III 15Hrs


Error analysis and curve fitting: Types of errors, random and systematic errors, error flow,
accuracy and precision, least square fit, chi-square test, Linear and nonlinear curve fitting.

UNIT – IV 15Hrs
Statistical Methods: Random number generation, Visual representation of statistical data, mean-
mode-median, Binomial-Poisson-Gaussian distributions, Variance, Standard deviation,
Uncertainty and other errors in statistical data, Confidence interval, Testing of hypothesis.
Software tools: Data analysis and curve fitting, plotting tools in MS-Excel, ORIGIN,
MATLAB/OCTAVE, Fundamentals of programming in MATLAB/OCTAVE
