Assignment/Project formulation/2019

Your company is given two engineering interventions for the Engineering building.

Option 1: Rainwater harvesting

Option 2: Electricity generation via solar panels

Work out:

1. The quantity of rainwater to be harvested and the underground collection tank dimensions.
Consider the roof area as the catchment. In this regard work out the range of rain water
harvestable (maximum and minimum in m 3), and the corresponding tank dimensions. Consider
2018 rain fall data, and assume Engineering building host 1000 people per day for all seven days.
Each person may use 20 – 0 L of rainwater per day and the usage is uniformly from 8 30 am to 8 30
pm. The rainfall can be assumed to be uniform within a given month and all months have 30 days
(e.g. if the rainfall in month X is due to rainfall events in days 1 to 10 and 20-25. You should assume
the total rainfall in that month is evenly distributed in all 30 days. Sum up to get total rainfall and
divide by 30).
2. Range of electricity that can be generated (maximum to minimum). Assume the entire roof can be
installed with solar panels. Assume the monthly energy use is 8000 kW, and excess energy can be
sold to National Grid at Rs 30 per kW. Also assume, CEB charge a flat rate of Rs 35/kW from its
consumers.

To be submitted:

1. A report not more than 10 pages, where font type, size etc same as this document. Report should
include, but not limited: (i) a SWOT analysis for the two options (ii) A discussion evaluating which
option is better based on economic, technical and environmental feasibilities. (iii) Also, briefly
discuss installation of solar panels to a house in Colombo 7 against rain water harvesting (iii
maximum 300 words).
2. An excel sheet showing the calculations, equations, etc.

Submit report in pdf format. Both file should be named using the index numbers of the group members.
Then include both in a zip file (file name same as instructed) and upload.

Deadline:

October 4th (will be duly marked and will get a chance to resubmit if marks are very low, do not misuse and
submit substandard work to get my comments. Such will be investigated and penalized). Another link will
be given for late submissions (October 25 th, no chance of resubmission, marks given will be final marks).

If CA marks (quiz, this assignment and in class quizzes) less than 35% you will not be given any
supplementary assignments.
