Historical Background
In late April 1941, the battle of Greece was lost for the Allies. As the previous year in Dunkirk, the British troops were evacuated by the
Royal Navy. In the Peloponnese, some elements of the 16th Australian Brigade and service units were gathered in the harbor of Kalamata
awaiting their evacuation. On the 28th of April, when an armored column of the 5.Panzer Division entered in the town, the Australian
soldiers, waiting their turn in an olive grove, formed some improvised battle groups and attacked the Germans with fixed bayonets. They
sacrificed themselves to allow their comrades to embark and to escape of the capture. Sergeant J. Hinton won a Victoria Cross for his
gallant action but was wounded and captured. The next day, the British troops that were not evacuated during the night, out of munitions
and without any hope to embark, surrendered to the Germans. The battle of Greece was over, the battle of Crete was about to begin.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
