CLEOPATRA» BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Taisiya Susareva 10-A Tragedy
"Antony and Cleopatra" is a tragedy by
William Shakespeare with a plot based on Thomas North’s translation of Plutarch’s life of Mark Antony from the French translation by Jacques Amiot. The play was first performed by The King's Men at Blackfriars or the Globe Theater around 1607. Its first appearance in print was in the 1623 folio. Written either 1607 or 1603–1604. Dating and text
Many scholars believe that Shakespeare's play was composed
in 1606–07, although some scholars argue for an earlier date, around 1603–04.
Antony and Cleopatra was entered into the Stationers'
Register in May 1608, but it appears not to have actually been printed until the publication of the First Folio in 1623. The folio is therefore the only authoritative text today.
Some scholars suggest that it originates from Shakespeare's
own draft, or "shoddy papers", as it contains minor errors in speech patterns and scene directions considered characteristic of an author in the process of composing. Characters
