A True Story that Transcends Employee Value Proposition

It was an afternoon, a complain was made verbally by floor in charge that the peon has got indulged into
stealing some factory material. Mr Ramesh Dalmiya, the officer in Personnel relation on duty took the
matter and conducted an inquiry and recommended the termination of services of that Peon.The matter
was brought to promoters because the size of the company was small those days and promoters were
more involved in things that too at personal level. So, promoters were of the view that we should not
remove that peon from services. He may be transferred but removal is not advised. The
Officer(Personnel) put forth strong argument that it may give a wrong message in organization if he is
not being removed, but the promoters said that if you would remove this guy he will start robbery, so
let him be a thief only, there are other ways to minimize it. They suggested that he may be transferred.

After few years there was one more incident that took place and that is one cook deputed at residence
of promoters drained five KG pure Ghee. One morning when Mr Diman was walking around residence,
he saw that something is piling up in drain coming out of kitchen, when he went near to notice it , it was
Ghee. Then they asked the Cook that why he drained the Ghee then he said that I drained it because
madam had reprimanded me that I am using much ghee in cooking and I felt bad so drained all. Then, he
was also transferred at office work and he was no more allowed to work at residence of promoters.

One morning Mr Ramesh Dalmia saw that few people come to office and spend only two hours and read
newspapers and go back. They were given car and driver with all other facilities. So, looking at this Mr
Ramesh asked his boss that sir “They only come and read newspapers and magazines for two hours and
go back and they are paid well also” so the boss said it’s like that only, promoters believe that may be by
their destiny or good vibes only business is flourishing so they respect all by and large and give them due
importance.

After few years, when the company expanded and next generation people also joined, there were many
units where people were removed for the reasons where they were not totally responsible and those
were unimportant mistakes. Hence, company did not compromise with measurable performance and
became very aggressive in nature. The company was responded on many occasions immediately and
took tough decisions. The company was a large group and had started being known for sharp actions
against those who were even found least guilty.

This entire story has been written by Dr Rahuul Singh while interacting with a CHRO of a large company

years.
