Introduction
Construction industries have always been playing an important role in a nation’s building, especially for our
country Malaysia whom strives to be a developed country with vision 2020. Steel, being a vital component in
construction is always being in focus. Of late, the Government has emphasized a lot on improving the
productivity in the construction industry.

Due to the increased demand for better quality construction within shorter time frame and the need to reduce
over-dependence on foreign labour, the construction industries in Malaysia is beginning to switch to more
advanced and sophisticated techniques to improve construction efficiency and productivity.

In this context, welded steel mesh has been identified as one of a few types of prefabricated steel elements which
is able to improve construction efficiency and productivity.

The ease and speed with which welded steel mesh can be handled and installed, considerably reduces placing
time and consequently reduces the cost of the installed reinforcing steel. Its ability to reduce construction time is
also in line with our Government’s emphasis on Industrialised Building System (IBS) - prefabrication and
automation - in order to solve the increasingly great shortage of construction workers in Malaysia.

Southern Steel Mesh Sdn Berhad (SSM) is one of the leading steel mesh manufacturer in the ASEAN region which
produces quality mesh and other wire products. SSM is a subsidiary of Southern Steel Berhad, which is listed in
the main board of Bursa Malaysia.

This Technical visit is organised with the objectives for fellow engineers to gain some technical knowledge and
specification of welded mesh complying to Malaysian Standard MS 145, and also witness the production
processes of the mesh products.

Speakers Profiles
Ir Yap Kong Lim is currently the Technical Manager in Southern Steel Mesh Sdn Bhd (SSM). He graduated from
National University of Singapore in year 1989 with a Degree in Civil Engineering. Prior to joining SSM, he was
working in a consulting firm in Singapore as a Design Engineer. He has more than 20 years of experience in
construction industries especially in the steel mesh industries.

Mr Ang Haw Ghee is the Production Manager in SSM. He has graduated from a University in the United Kingdom
with a Master Degree in Engineering and Manufacturing Management. He has been working in SSM since year
1996 and has more than 18 years of working experience.
