2nd and 3rd Meeting
CHECKING VITAL SIGNS

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to communicate about implementation of checking vital signs

2. Participants will be able to give some instructions during implementation of checking
vital signs

Nursing Note 1:

1. BP (Blood Pressure)
2. Temperature
3. Pulse
4. Breath/Respiration

Nursing Note 2:

Therapeutic communication: it is now common practice for nurses to communicate

with patients as much as possible when they are doing routine nursing tasks. If nurses
talk, the patients become involved in their treatment. As a nurse takes the patient’s
vital signs, it will be better a nurse says what she is going to do, explains why she is
doing it and gives the patient feedback.

Useful Expressions:

1. It is time for me ..........

2. I just want ..........
3. I would like ..........
4. I am going ..........
 To measure your blood pressure
 To count our pulse
 To check your respiration
 To measure your temperature
 To put this cuff around your upper arm
 To insert this thermometer into your armpit

Example of Conversation:

Nurse : Good morning Mr. Rowlan.

Patient : Good morning, Nurse.

Nurse : Did you sleep well last night?

Patient : Not really, I feel fever.

Nurse : (touching his forehead) Let me check your temperature. It looks like that you’ve got
high temperature. Now, I am going to check your temperature using this thermometer. May I
insert this into your armpit?

Patient : Sure

Nurse : Just keep it there for about 5 minutes. .......... (taking out the thermometer)

Patient : How is my temperature, Nurse?

Nurse : It is 38.5 degree Celcius. I’ll report this to your doctor. Don’t worry.

Patient : Thank you Nurse.

Nurse : No problem. Anyway, I’ll continue to measure our blood pressure
