Read the story. Then, circle the correct answer.

Dr. Alexander Fleming was a scientist from Scotland. In 1928 he was

working in his laboratory when he made one of the most important discoveries
in medical history: the world’s first antibiotic. Dr. Fleming said he did not plan
to discover the antibiotic. He made the discovery by accident! Dr. Fleming was
trying to grow some bacteria in his laboratory when he discovered that a mold
called Penicillium stopped the bacteria from growing. In 1943 other doctors
were able to turn Penicillium into a medicine that killed bacteria. This new
“wonder drug” was named penicillin. Before penicillin was available, many
patients with open wounds died because bacteria infected their blood and
poisoned their bodies. Penicillin helped protect such patients from bacteria. The
discovery Dr. Fleming made years ago in his laboratory has saved the lives of
millions of patients—and still saves the lives of many people every day!

Use the blank lines to write three paragraphs.

Example. Write three paragraphs that persuade someone to support a new law
that would help keep children safe and healthy.

There are many laws that help children stay safe and healthy. We need
these laws because children cannot always protect themselves. That is why I
would support a law that prevents people from smoking in a car where children
are present.

Whenever someone smokes, he or she produces secondhand smoke. Research

proves that secondhand smoke is dangerous for children. Children who grow up
around secondhand smoke may develop asthma or lung problems.

We must work together to protect children from secondhand smoke. We

should pass this new law against people who smoke in a car where children are
present. This would be a step toward making sure that children stay safe and
have a healthy future.

10. Write three paragraphs that persuade someone to support a new law
that would help keep people safe and healthy.
