To + infinitive

To + Infinitive = To + verb 1
Infinitive = verb 1
Example of verb 1= go, do, talk etc

Function:
1. To express purpose
2. To give reason
3. To ask the question ‘WHY’
Example:
He bought some flowers. He wanted to give it to his wife.
Combine the 2 sentences using to + infinitive
He bought some flowers to give to his wife.

The use of: in order to, so as to to replace to + infinitive


Positive : in order to, so as to
Negative : in order not to, so as not to

Positive sentence:
He bought some flowers to give to his wife.
He bought some flowers in order to give to his wife.
He bought some flowers so as to give to his wife.

Negative sentence:
They spoke quietly not to wake the children
They spoke quietly in order not to wake the children
They spoke quietly so as not to wake the children
