6. Read the article. Complete the sentences with information from

the text. (two points each)

Is It Positive to Be Positive?

Being positive is good for us, or so we are often told. Feeling down
and having a miserable outlook on life is surely bad for us. By
making up our minds to just be more positive, we become less
depressed and more satisfied with life. According to some people,
we can change our problems into opportunities, we can attract other
positive people, and we can achieve greater success. But is all this
really true?

Of course, it would be ridiculous to suggest we should be

deliberately negative all the time. But not having negative thoughts
could have a harmful effect, and there are actually times when we
should be grateful for our negative thoughts.

In fact, research shows that couples who are extremely positive

about their future tend to have weaker marriages. Also, very
optimistic people seem to earn about 25% less money.

What happens when we are too positive or too confident? One result
is that we take too many risks. We think that we are safe, but the
chances of getting into trouble increase. A positive-thinking person
might go into an exam thinking that they will not fail. In contrast,
what does a more negative person do? They might think that they
will fail, and will work harder before the exam. In this kind of
situation, the negative thinker might do better.

Perhaps it is better to stop calling people “negative thinkers,&#8221

and call them “realistic&#8221 instead. Someone who believes that
nothing will go wrong is more likely to end up hurt than someone
who always bears in mind that bad things may happen in the future.

We probably need a balance of positive and negative thoughts in our

lives. Bad things can (and will) happen. At the same time, it is not
good to imagine that only bad things will happen to us. Perhaps the
best solution is to be hopeful for the best, but to prepare for the
worst. That way, we can protect ourselves and remain cheerful, too.

1. People often tell us to be _____________________.

2. We shouldn’t always try to have negative _____________________.

3. It can have a _____________________ if we only think positively.

4. Sometimes people who have negative thoughts are just being

_____________________ about life.

5. It’s good to have a _____________________ of positive and negative

thoughts.
