How to Spot Fake News

The IFLA shared a poster concerning fake news, in collaboration with FactCheck.org, in which
the association aims to raise awareness on the debunking of fake news. The choice of medium was well
made since the poster is highly graphic and is attention grabbing for when it comes to researchers in
libraries and educational institutions which makes it easier to read and allows it to reach a wider
outreach of audience. One knows that the text is targeted towards young researchers due to the setting
it has been allocated to and the simplistic approach of graphics and since it tackles a common modern
research issue. This makes the text consist of highly informational purposes of awareness in education in
addition to a slight commercial purpose due to the collaboration between IFLA and FactCheck.org. The
text specifically explains that in order to spot fake news one must check the author, consider the source,
read beyond the lines, search for supporting resources, check the date, make sure it’s not a joke, check
your biases, and ask experts. The graphics, technical simplistic words, semantic fields, and shoutty words
all contribute to the fulfillment of the aims of the poster.
