“Climate” changing the Architecture

In a building design “climate” is the main concept of the design as it

differs in different areas. The design of a residence in Bangladesh is
totally different from the residence of Spain just because of the
climate. Climate plays a big role in terms of designing anything.

Bangladesh is a hot humid country. Being a hot humid country while

designing a building we have to consider more about our climate
like,

- Air circulation
- Sun path direction
- Proper ventilation
- Study of air
- Day light and many more.

We have to design in such way to create a great air circulation

path, placing windows in such ways so that the building doesn’t
heat up etc. But in other country such as “Switzerland” their climate
is different from us. They have to think more about heating up the
house which is exactly opposite to ours. So their building design looks
completely different from us.

From the pictures above we can see that the whole design of these
two buildings are different. Just because of the climate the whole
design concept changes.

In our climate we don’t actually need air conditioner or full glass

façade typical buildings. If we design considering the climate we
actually don’t need air conditioner. According to our climate the
hot summer stays maximum 2-3 months in which it often rains. Fully
glassed façade’s buildings are for cold climate country’s to keep
the heat inside the house. That’s the main concept of big glassed
windows and glass façade’s. But according to our climate we need
to circulate the air as much as possible. Just by designing
considering our climate we can maximize the use of air conditioner.
By following the western culture just to be like them we picked the
wrong concept of designing a building. In most cases we can see
that in our country there are many buildings with air conditioner
which we don’t needed only if we had solved the design according
to our climate and thinking about our climate.

As example of well solved design considering the climate we can

take this building
It doesn’t actually need air conditioner the facades are designed
according to the climate, the ventilation ,air circulation was
designed according to the climate and surroundings .

But there are some buildings in which air conditioners are must just
because of the design. Moreover we have a big advantage of this
climate being able to grow trees the whole year. So if we design a
green building considering our climate it will help us a lot to cool
down the building.

If we see some of our old buildings we can see that there were
courtyard inside the house for proper ventilation.

They used to make wall thicker for the structural support and to
prevent the heat going inside the house.

Façade should be design according to the surroundings of the

building. The façade will in different level of the building according
to the climate and surroundings.

But we need air conditioner in our country in some exceptional

cases such as,

- Hospital
- Hotels
- Airports etc.

But if we see the current condition of the world the “Corona

Pandemic” in such research it is proved that corona spreads more in
ac rooms as it has no ventilation. The same air circulates in the room
for hours which is harmful for us.

Moreover air conditioner is very expensive and costly to maintain. It

is also harmful as it affects the environment.

We actually don’t need air conditioner in our typical buildings if we

understand our climate and design according to our climate. We
have to understand we cannot follow western buildings culture we
have our own building design culture which suits our climate and
helpful for us and our climate.
