Literature Review:
Ring:
A ring is universally defined as a curved bar or beam whose cross-sectional area
dimensions are small in comparison with its radius of curvature. Virtually every industry
involved with the design of mechanical components of structures is faced with the need
to analyze the stresses and strains in rings subjected to various combinations of loads. In
submarines, for example, the hull is fabricated from a number of rings. These rings must
-be capable of withstanding radial forces due to shock and water pressure. The rings
also have to withstand normal forces due to thermal expansions. Other examples of ring
applications are to be found in frameworks of aircraft and missiles, bearings, radar and
etc.
Square:
A square is a structure made up of four pieces of bars or beams with an angle of 90
degrees with each other. The applications of square structures include chassis structure
of vehicles, transport containers and etc.
Experimentation & Calculations:
The purpose of this experiment is to determine the displacements at various points in a
normally loaded ring and square which is constrained at several points along its
circumference and lengths by fixed and/or simple supports. The points of application of
external forces are completely arbitrary (1).
The deflection in ring is determined by the formula:
MA = MB = 0.318PR
∂AB = 0.149PR3/EI
∂CD = 0.137PR3/EI
I = pi (d3)/4
E = 200x103 N/mm
d = 250mm
While for that in the square is given by the formula:
MA = MB = 3PL/16
∂AB = 0.026PL3/EI
∂CD = 0.0156PL3/EI
I = bh3/12, b = 25mm, h = 3mm
E = 200x103 N/mm
L = 250mm

Load (N) Vertical Reading Horizontal Reading
Dial A ∂AB Dial C Dial D C+D ∂CD
5 0.17 0.541 0.11 0.20 0.31 0.325

15 0.56 1.62 0.20 0.35 0.55 0.975
Conclusion:
From the observed data, we conclude that for both ring and square, as the load is
increasing the horizontal and vertical dial reading is also increasing. This results in
increasing value of deflection for increasing trend of load.
