Gas Power Cycle Homework Problems

This document assigns homework problems from the textbook involving calculations for several common gas power cycles, including the Carnot, Otto, Diesel, Ericsson, and Brayton cycles. Students are to determine key parameters like work output, efficiency, temperatures, and pressures. The problems provide the necessary cycle conditions and specifications to complete the assigned calculations.

Applied Thermodynamics
Homework # 1 (Gas Power Cycles

Do problems (from the 6th edition):

9-23 (Carnot Cycle)

9-38 (Otto Cycle)
9-62 (Diesel Cycle)
9-77 (Ericsson Cycle)
9-98 (Simple Brayton Cycle)
9-105 (Simple Brayton Cycle)

Problem 9-23:

 Carnot cycle with the specified temperature limits is considered.

 The net work output per cycle is to be determined.
Problem 9-38:

 An ideal Otto cycle with air as the working fluid has a compression ratio of 9.5.
 The highest pressure and temperature in the cycle, the amount of heat transferred, the
thermal efficiency, and the mean effective pressure (MEP) are to be determined.
Problem 9-62:

 An ideal Diesel engine with air as the working fluid has a compression ratio of 20.
 The thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure are to be determined.
Problem 9-77:

 An ideal Ericsson engine with air as the working fluid is considered.

 The maximum pressure in the cycle, the net work output, and the thermal efficiency of the
cycle are to be determined.
Problem 9-98:

 A gas turbine power plant that operates on the simple Brayton cycle with air as the working
has a specified pressure ratio.
 The required mass flow rate of air is to be determined for two cases.
Problem 9-105:

 A gas turbine power plant that operates on the simple Brayton cycle.
 The net power output, the back work ratio, and the thermal efficiency are to be
determined.
