Nitrogen is sometimes mistakenly considered harmless because it is non toxic and largely inert.

However it can act as an aphyxiant by displacing the oxygen in the air to levels below that required to
support life.

There are also other hazards associated with the use of nitrogen such as as:

- Storing it into pressurized container and releasing it in an uncontrolled manner which can
cause serious injury or even death.
- A nitrogen jet can also propel objects, such as dust and dirt and turn-then into bullet-like
objects and may even rupture pipes and equipment under certain pressure.
- Nitrogen can also be liquefied for storage, liquid nitrogen is extremely cold and can cause
serious burns similar to thermal burns
- Product misidentification: example: a worker switched nitrogen bottle with oxygen bottle om

Recommendation:

- Always wear proper ppe

- Nitrogen pressurized systems should always be installed with adequate pressure relief
system.
- Keep the minimum presence to personnel involved in on-going nitrogen operations.
- Do not only rely on the container color as an identifier but you must read the label to identify
its content.
