“It’s a little bit overwhelming,” Cameron,
a senior this fall at Aledo High School,

being here, all my family and friends.”
Congregated inside the small chapel
at Ridglea Presbyterian Church in Fort
Worth, family, friends and fellow scouts
gathered to see Cameron receive the high-
est rank a member of the boy scouts can
earn.
“This is a real proud moment because
it continues the tradition in our fam-
ily that was started way back when my
grandfather got his Eagle in 1931,” said
Cameron’s father Frank Shiels, who earned
his Eagle Scout ranking in 1973. “Scouting
has always been a big part of our life,
my life, and it started when I visited my
grandfather’s troop.
“I was just a little boy, and I saw all
those kids running around in their uni-
forms, bugles and big army tents and I
thought this is really cool.”
Getting to this point, however, has

“When it did get hard and I did try
to quit at times, both my father and my
mother said, ‘No, no way, you’re not quit-
ting.’ I’m glad they said that,” Cameron
said.
“Now that I’ve achieved Eagle and I’ve
achieved so much, and I know it is pos-
sible and it wasn’t an impossible task, and
that it wasn’t that bad, I really enjoyed it.
I’m glad I stayed in ‘cause it was definitely
worth it.”
The applause echoed in the hollow
chapel as each acknowledgement of
Cameron’s success during his boy scout
tenure was announced. There were letters
from Texas Congresswoman Kay Granger
and former President George W. Bush.
Governor Rick Perry, a fellow Eagle Scout,
sent a copy of his book and a certificate.
“I feel very honored because I know
this is a very difficult thing to achieve,”
Cameron said. “A former president con-
gratulating me, makes me feel very
happy.
“It makes me feel very special and that
means he obviously values scouts in some

sense, too.”
Pride was the word of the day for
everyone in attendance and even those
who were there in spirit. Cameron’s moth-
er died five years ago after battling colon
cancer. Seeing her son achieve the rank of
Eagle Scout would have been something
she would want to witness.
“If she were here today, she’d give
(Cameron) a big hug and tell him how
proud she was of him,” Frank Shiels said.
“She would’ve told me how proud she was
of me for supporting Cameron in his effort
to continue along the scouting journey.”
And what exactly would she say to
Cameron?
“She’d probably say, ‘Cameron I love
you, I’m so proud of you, I’m really glad
you achieved this honor,’” the newly
donned Eagle Scout said.
After senior year, Cameron plans to
stay in Texas to go to college. He credits
his many experiences for his undecided
major, but a smaller school like UNT or
Tarleton, he said, would be the best fit.
