Warm up:
1. Identify the structure in Names/Nombres? (The way an author composes
his/her text. Setting‐ place or location, time period, characters or people involved,
Feeling‐ the emotion of the texts, how the narrator or author feels, and how feeling
changes or stays the same throughout the story, and Shape‐ how the story is set up,
the way it its written, what does it look like)
In Names/Nombres‐ the story take place in New York City during the 1960’s
and Julia Alvarez tries to understand the importance of her Dominican heritage
while going to school and living in a distinct American culture. She uses Spanish
words, spells them out phonetically, and uses quotations to show how people
misunderstand her culture and where she is from. She use italics to show the
different names she has been given. At the beginning she is dismayed and frightened
to tell people about herself and she become indifferent by the end because
friendship and acceptance is more important
2. What is the main idea of the text? How do you know?
Julia Alvarez learns how she can feel comfortable about her Dominican culture in
American culture. She is shaping herself and developing her identity.
