Tree spiking is a human act where nailing the tree with metal rod, nail, or other material into

a tree trunk . In other countries this action is one of the tactics of a movement known as an eco
terrorism. Until now the definition of eco terrorism is still ambiguous. In one side there is an
opinion says that Eco terrorism is a form of radical action by a particular group in the
preservation of the environment. They have a noble purpose, but they used an extreme ways to
reach their purpose. The ways that they use are usually vandalism and terror aimed to employees
of companies doing damage to the environment as well as other companies related to the
company. They also carry out acts such as burning and bombing of places that support animal
exploitation such as restaurants, and animal exemption in places such as animal husbandry and
breeding. They’re not different as an other terrorist.
Generally they use this tactics to damage the chainsaw and equipment which use to cut
the tree or sometimes to frightened the logger for injured their self. In 1987, there is one big case.
A California mill worker George Alexander was seriously injured when the bandsaw he was
operating shattered by either an old nail or a tree spike. This led the leader of Earth First! to
denounce tree spiking.
But not just that, The spike reduces the commercial value of the wood by causing
discoloration, there by reducing the economic viability of logging in the long term, without
threatening the life of the trees.
In Indonesia there are many trees that nailed.
They usually put up banners, product advertisements,
and elections. Maybe they’re not realized their acts will
hurt the trees. The trees which nailed make the
cambium inside the trees is damaged. As a result, the
trees become susceptible toward the illness. The
strength of wood will be reduced because the trees
easily infected diseases such as fungi and bacteria
because of the many doors for pests and diseases on the
bark of the tree.

So we as Indonesian people we must take care

the trees from it. We have to conserve it not to
destroy the trees.
