Wheeler High School’s Senior Project allows each senior the opportunity to
demonstrate his/her years of educational experience in reading, writing,
speaking, accessing information, thinking, problem solving, organizing, and
time-managing. These skills will be showcased through the following process:

• a resume documenting all the student’s skills accomplished so far in their

educational and professional experiences.

• a proposal providing the rational of the chosen field of interest and

sharing the educational background and/or qualification of the primary
expert.

• an interview with at least one primary expert or professional in an area of

the student’s choosing; several experts are recommended.

• a cover letter written to a possible professional in the chosen field of

interest.

• a research paper on a topic of the student's choosing within the chosen

field of interest.

• a portfolio documenting the entire process.

• an oral presentation, given before a review board of teachers,

synthesizing the first three components.

Each student is asked to include “tools of the trade”/technology component that

encourages the student to challenge themselves.

Consequences of Failure to Meet Deadlines

One of the most important skills that the Senior Project teaches is time-management. By breaking up the

components into required deadlines, students will learn how to take a semester project and complete it in manageable

segments. This is a vital skill both for college and for the workplace.

Students must also learn to meet deadlines. If a deadline is not met, consequences will follow. Students

MUST turn in each of the project components in the order in which they are assigned. Since each component of the

Senior Project must be completed before the next component is begun, it is vital that students complete assignments

on time. If a deadline is missed, the student will receive a zero on that part until it is turned in, at which point the

student will receive the earned grade ONLY up to 70% of the points possible for that item. (*The portfolio is subject

to 10 points off each day after the due date as described on its rubric. This component is of uber time sensitivity for

grading purposes due to Boards Night.) Each assignment must be completed to receive a grade for the subsequent

part.

Deadlines for due dates have been set by the Senior Project Committees and are NOT at the discretion of

individual English teachers. Failure to meet a deadline will result in a grade penalty for each component turned in

after the deadline; English teachers are not at liberty to change these late grades. If a student feels that he/she has a

legitimate excuse for being late on a component and should not be penalized, the student will have to address the

Senior Project Eligibility Committee (Mrs. Amber Brattebo) to submit a personal appeal.
