EXERCISE 12 - VOCABULARY

Q1 - Today there are more than 300 theories on ageing. The free
radical theory is the most (prominent, conspicuous, noticeable).
Free radical damage to cells leads to ageing. Whether or not

Dictionary:
 narrow – measuring a short distance from one side to the other,
especially in relation to length.
 precinct – the area around a place or a building, sometimes
surrounded by a wall.

Q4 – World health officials have issued their (toughest, deadliest,


strongest) warning yet about the health (threat, risk, hazard)
posed by a possible bird flu (epidemic, endemic, pandemic). Were
the virus to mutate into a (strain, quality, trait) that could be easily
(passed, transmitted, inherited) to humans, the consequences
would be (dangerous, disastrous, drastic). So far, the avian flu has
killed 57 people in Southeast Asia, and new cases are being
(diagnosed, discovered, prescribed), especially in Indonesia, where

flu outbreak.

Q5 – Fashion involves seduction of the senses. Today (chic,


fashionable, trendy), rich, eye-catching avant-garde (cloth, fabric,
textile) is part of the fashion scene. A good fashion (tailor, designer,
creator) must fully understand the essence of (touch, texture,
quality), flow, colour and print of fabric. He then adds the right
(cut, edge, pattern) and design for that particular fabric while
taking into account the body structure and skin (colour, feel, tone)
of his client. While Americans and Europeans are rather (broad,
wide, massive) shouldered, their Asian counterparts are usually
more (skinny, petite, trim).

Q6 – Golden’s Memoirs of Geisha is a sweeping romantic (blockbuster,
legend, tale) set in the mysterious and exotic world of early 20th-
century Japan, which (casts, reveals, puts) a powerful spell on readers.
In this novel, Nitta Sayuri (tells, narrates, outlines) the story of her
life. Sayuri’s (epic, story, account) begin in a poor fishing village in
1929, when, as a 9-year-old with unusual blue-grey eyes, she is taken
from her home and sold to a renowned geisha house. Through her (view,
eyes, sight) we see the depraved heart of Gion – the geisha district of
Kyoto. The book gives us a/an (account, elaboration, explanation) of
Sayuri’s transformation into the legendary geisha. Memoirs of Geisha is
a book of nuances and (clear, visible, vivid) metaphor, with memorable

full action and adventure.
 vivid – (of memories, s description, etc.) producing very clear
pictures in your mind.
