sole parents i.e. 21%. Which was about 232,000. The lowest poverty rate was of
aged couple, which was about 4%(48,000) as compared to the other mentioned
in the table. Overall, 11% of Australians which was about 1,837,000 people
were living in poverty. Aged couples and single aged people facing poverty of
6% and 4% respectively. Single parents were living in poverty with proportion
of 19% whereas only 12% poverty were faced by couple with children. The
couple without children was much lower which was about 7%(211,000) as
shown in the table.

Question#2:
Answer: Radio is a media for communication. Radio is now far less demanded
as compared to T.V. The positive point of Radio is that it is accessible in most
of the places. It is less costly, although radio disadvantages are that it lacks
visual, Radio does not adapt to changes and that’s why it is rejected by the
current generation.

Whilst T.V is an electronic device which enable us to see anything that maybe
taking place around the world any time. T.V is a source of education and
entertainment. It is more appealing as compared to radio, as it is multi-lingual
and multi- culture. As it has many languages and channels for every culture. As
much TV is informative, it is also dangerous as it can manipulate people minds
and brainwash them. T.V show the news which cause terror and fear among the
people. It sometime gets biased and show only the bad side of people while

hiding who they really are or may hide the thousand sins of a person and show
one good thing he did to make fool out of the people. Some people have called
T.V a brainwashing machine, which I agree with up to some extinct.

Films show different perspective of life depending on various culture, sometime

showing fiction. It affects people’s mind badly, not all of them, but the one with
violence and crime scenes. Most people after watching criminal on the movies,
like famous drug lords, gangster, and mafia, they are often inspired by that.
Which make them take illegal steps. But there are also very good movies with
best core messages which effect people too and attract people toward doing
good things.

In my opinion T.V can easily manipulate people mind and infiltrate it. T.V
(news) has the power to make hero out of villain and villain out of hero and the
people believes them easily. So, it is more effective.

Summary of passage 3

Part 1

The passage is about the power of pictures and how they can talk beyond our
imaginations. Like even the blind people can draw images and shapes in a way
to convey their messages. The writer talks about a blind woman who was her
subject and she did an unbelievable thing regarding drawing the “motion” of an
object. To draw a spinning wheel and show its circular motion, that woman
draw a circle with a curve line inside of the circle. When asked why? She said
that’s it’s in circular motion. The author was blown away by this. Lines of
motion which she used were recent invention in the world. To make it sure, the
author told some other blind subjects to draw a spinning wheel. All of them
almost draw the same thing, A circle with a curve line inside of it. When asked
about those curves, they described it as metaphorical ways of showing motion

of the object. Shocked by this, the author conducted another experiment where
she draws different type of lines and told her 18 blind subjects to feel them. She
assigns few motions to them and asked the subjects to assign each motion with
respect to the drawn shape. The same activity was conducted by 18 sighted
people too. The results were amazing, except one blind subject all the other had
answered almost the same and they weren’t behind the sighted people in this.
Alone the blind subjects were not as same as the sighted people as they aren’t
familiar with motions of objects that much but as a group they performed very
well, almost same as the sighted persons.

Part 2

It’s just not this, the blind people can even understand other kinds of visual
metaphors. A blind woman drew a child inside a heart, when asked what does
this mean? She replied, that it shows the love which surround that baby. The
author started exploring how well blind people can understand symbolism
behind the shapes with Chang Hong Liu, a doctoral student. A list was given to
sighted subjects of twenty pairs of words and they were asked to give pick the
word which meet best with a square and circle. The first pair of word was soft
and hard. The subjects in majority, almost all of them chose hard for square and
soft for circle. Also, the when given the word pair of sad and happy, most of
them assign sad to square and happy to circle (94% of them). When the same
test was conducted with blind people the results were not that different. Thus, it
shows that blind people understand shapes as much as sighted people.
