Justification in Romans by Carl Cosaert

I. The Uniqueness of Romans

Paul did not found the church in Rome, he did not write them to address specific

problems, unlike in others of his letters. So, Paul wrote his most systematic letter of how he

understands the gospel.

II. Paul’s chosen beginning: The Sin Problem

A. The Place of Sin in Romans – 1:18-3:20

B. The Focus of God’s Wrath – Our Sinful Actions

1. The Extent of Sin – Gentiles and Jews: encompassing humanity,

Sin is universal.

2. The Nature of Sin – Human Behavior: Sin is pervasive: it affects

every part of our body and existence.

3. Humans are incapable of solving the problem themselves.

III. God’s Solution to our Sinful Action – Romans 3:21-26 Justification is Christ’s

righteousness credited to Us and our guilt credited to Jesus on the cross.

Justification is not forgiveness.

IV. Justification: The legal Model

Sin: Act of disobedience

Christ’s life and death: Payment for the penalty owed by others

Christ’s resurrection: Demonstration payment accepted

Reception: Trusting acceptance

Ethical Response: Reciprocal Love
