Introduction

1 Introduction

This document describes the procedure for handling faulty equipment and
replacement parts.

The Site Failure Note (SFN) described in this document replaces the
previously used Repair Delivery Note (RDN Blue Tag). The RDN can still be
used in a transition period.

The procedures in this document only refer to the SFN, but can also be
applied to the RDN in general terms.

When returning a faulty unit, it is mandatory to attach a filled out SFN. Figure 1
shows the SFN.

Note: This document does not describe how to replace hardware units; it
describes only how to handle the units before and after the
replacement procedure. The replacement procedure is described in
the hardware replacement document for the suspected faulty unit.

1.1 Target Group

The target groups for this document are the following:

• Field technicians

• Service personnel responsible for handling spare parts

Handling Faulty Equipment

1.2 Prerequisites
Before proceeding with the instructions in this document, make sure of the
following:

• An SFN is available.

• All data required for the SFN has been collected. See Table 1 for data
required.

• An Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) bag and packing material for returning

units are available.

Note: The packing material from the replacement unit can be used to
pack the replaced unit.

Handling Replacement Parts

2 Handling Replacement Parts

This section describes the procedure for handling and packing, or unpacking a
unit.

Do not expose units to extreme temperature variations caused by, for

example, direct sunlight, or to high levels of humidity. Condensation and
extreme heat can damage hardware or lead to hardware failure. Unpack the
replacement unit in the intended operating environment.

Note: Replacement units must be kept in their ESD protective bag and
original cardboard box until they are ready to be installed at site.

Exercise care when handling units. Avoid touching components on

printed circuits or connector pins. Damage to components or
connector pins can lead to hardware failure.

Do the following:

Steps

1. Check the packing material of the replacement unit. If the packing is

damaged, check the unit. If the unit appears damaged, return it to the
service center for repair or replacement.

2. Complete the SFN, giving all the information about the suspected fault. For
a detailed description of how to fill out the SFN, see Completing the Site
Failure Note on page 5.

3. Put the filled out SFN with the hardware unit being returned to the repair
center.

4. Pack the unit suspected to be faulty in the packing material from the
replacement part in the following order:

Handling Faulty Equipment

a. ESD Bag
b. SFN
c. Shock-absorbent padding
d. Box

Note: If the unit is ESD sensitive (as are all printed board assemblies),
the bag must be ESD protective.

5. Make sure that the outside of the box is marked “FAULTY UNIT”, and has
a list of the contents.

6. Return the packaged unit to the local Ericsson repair center, making sure
that the handling and delivery method complies with any local procedures
additional to this document.

Completing the Site Failure Note

3 Completing the Site Failure Note

This section describes how to fill out the SFN.

Note: The SFN is an important message to the repair center to assist in

localizing the exact cause of the suspected failure and, therefore, the
information requested should be completed as far as possible. This
enables Ericsson to respond as quickly as possible.

Figure 1 shows the SFN. Table 1 provides a guide to the information to be

collected for each required field. It is important to provide as much information
as possible to assist with localizing faults and to ensure that the source can be
identified and removed.

It is recommended to fill out the SFN on a computer and then print it out, but it
can also be printed out blank to be filled out by hand.

For a PDF version of the SFN, refer to Site Failure Note.

Note: Fill out all free text options with capital letters in English.
