Word of God

Genesis 22:1-12

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him,
“Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your
only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a
burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early
in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and
Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the
place of which God had told him. Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw
the place afar off. And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the
lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.” So Abraham took
the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his
hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. But Isaac spoke to Abraham his
father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the
fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My
son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went
together. Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an
altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on
the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay
his son. But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, 'Abraham,
Abraham!' So he said, 'Here I am.' And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do
anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your
son, your only son, from Me.”

DISCERN

God’s Covenantal People

Covenant
 an agreement. (n)
 a solemn agreement between the members of a church to act together in harmony
with the precepts of the gospel.
In the Bible (see also Bible), covenant is an agreement between God and his
people, in which God makes promises to his people and, usually, requires certain conduct
from them. In the Old Testament, God made agreements with Noah, Abraham, and Moses.

PATRIARCHS – father of tribe or human race

Abraham (Father of Faith) & Sarah
Isaac & Rebekah
Jacob and Rachel/Leah
JUDGES – ruler of tribal (before kings)
Moses - is called by God to lead his people from Egypt to the promised land.
KINGS – ruler of monarchy over ancient kingdom
King David – his wife is Bathsheba;
murder of Uriah (Bathsheba’s Husband)
had been chosen by God and anointed King secretly by Samuel when he was a boy.
King Solomon – derived from the Hebrew word
“shalom/shelomoh”
which means peace or prosperity.
He was the son of David and Bathsheba.
PROPHET/s
Ezekiel
Jeremiah
Isaiah
PROPHET/s
Before, we are confuse with the word “prophet” with a fortune teller
(manghuhula), who predicts what the future holds in store for us.
But in the old testament prophets were not like that. They were men called by
God to speak His word to the people.
God’s call through the prophets to repentance ends with an incredible promise.
Ezekiel describes Yahweh’s promises on Ez 36:26-27
“The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of the
Israel”. (Jer 31:31)

Their call to conversion was a radical upheaval.

“This is the plan proposed for the
whole earth…the Lord of hosts
has planned, who can thwart Him?”
(Is 14:26-27)

CONVERSION (turn back to God)

• this prophetic word comes a surprise;
• it is a word of passion
• it brings new hope, at the very time when things were completely hopeless.
• it is word of the Lord, breaking all conventional expectations.

The people “conversion” is not just self-made. Within the grace of conversion is the
promise of forgiveness.
