ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hi, my name is Janice Yap, creator

of ebooks 7 Foundations of
Happyness and 7 Days to an
Exceedingly Positive You, as well as
7 Health Myths Demolished.

I was born into a lower middle

income family in Singapore,
struggled through the regular education stream to make it to
university. During those years, my parents were drawing an
average salary, just sufficient to make ends meet, with some
months on deficit. Nevertheless, they provided for me and my
sisters to the best of their abilities, forking out more money
from their savings for additional lessons to develop us. My dad
even had to take on two jobs during our growing up years, so I
barely saw him during the week days. On weekends though, he
would spend quality time bringing us out to the zoo.

Just after I entered university, my dad was retrenched and

finances were a lot tighter in the family. My allowances were
barely sufficient for the endless list of necessities. Not wanting
to put more stress on the family, I had took on jobs to
complement my allowances.

5|P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

For the large fraction of my life, I have been very much inward
looking, focusing on what I did not have rather than what I had,
focusing on what was unfair instead of what I was freely given. I
was always feeling down, focusing too much on a great deal of
negativity. I felt that life was being unfair to me.

Despite the negativity, I was determined to do very well in my

university course as I had bought into the society’s notion that
getting a good degree would land me a good job, in a good
company and it will be happily forever after. Hence, I devoted
almost all my waking hours to studying. My efforts paid off, and
I graduated with First Class Honours in Chemical Engineering
from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

I kicked started my work life in a global multinational, one of

the top 10 of the Fortune 500 companies. Do you think my life
was really happily ever after? ;)

Although I was earning well and it was comfortable in that

working environment, I nevertheless continuously questioned
about my purpose of being there. Was I just going to settle for
this comfy life, pass my next 30 years the same as this current
one, reach retirement and then only find something meaningful
to do? Or could there be a better option for me?

I looked around me, at people that have gone before. People

that have devoted their most productive years to working for

6|P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

company, and I found people who were disillusioned. People

who pinned their hopes on their next generations, finding pride
when their children did well in school or in recollecting on their
yesteryears.

I was determined not to live life like that. I wanted to make

every second and every minute of my life count. I believe
everyone one of us, has what it takes to make a difference in the
world. I am one of them, and so are you. We just need to take
action to make this world a better place.

And that was what I did. I submitted my resignation after my

7th year once I got clear of my direction in life – To create a
disease-free world.

Being Happy and Positive is one of the factors which help our
immune systems to perform better. When they do, then we can
prevent diseases from occurring in itself. In fact, we as humans
are so prone to negativity that it eats away at us.

That’s why, I decided to kickstart www.PositiveHappyness.com

to add more happiness and positivity into this world. If you’re
also interested in how we can use superfoods to nourish our
immune system, you can find my other ebook and health
newsletter at http://www.PositiveHappyness.com/Health.

7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

#1 KNOWING YOUR PURPOSE

For most part of my life, I wondered why I was on this earth for?
What is my purpose? Is there a mission for me here? What do I
want to achieve at the end of my lifetime here?

Everyone is not a permanent resident on this earth. One day,

we will leave this place. The only question though, is “Do we
leave it better than when we first arrived?”

This became especially more important once I started working.

I needed to know what I was working towards at the end of the
day. I didn’t want to live a life after 80 years to only realise that
11 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

I haven’t lived at all. Initially, I tried to take a perspective that

at work, we contribute to the economy and better people’s lives.

Then as the daily grind continued, I realized that for most part
of my time at work, the ultimate aim of my company is to
enrich shareholders’ pockets. Do people’s lives really get better?
I asked myself.

Each and every one of us have choices. In fact, our current life
and lifestyle, is just a cumulative result of the choices that we
have made in the past, be it good or bad. Good choices would
have propelled us in a positive direction, while bad choices
would have made good learning lessons for us.

When it comes to our life purpose, we have a choice too. What

is it that we want to do for this world today? What is it that we
feel so strongly about, that it excites us to jump up from bed
12 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

every morning to quickly start our day? What is it that we

would continue to do, if money was not a problem at all?

These were some of the questions that I asked myself too, while
trying to gain clarity of the direction to head in life. Clarity is
power. Only with a very clear direction, can we make the result
significant.

So how can we find out our purpose in life?

First, we can look at what are our natural talents. Every one of
us have natural talents, some people may be very musical, able
to compose songs and able to pick up an instrument without
much coaching. For others, it may be a flair for writing, putting
words together to create a beautiful picture. For others, it may
be creativity and the arts. And yet for others, it may be a flair
for sciences or the mathematics. It may even be other skills like

13 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

photography! We are blessed in one way or another. How can

we use these gifts to benefit others around us and in the world?

Next, we can also consider some of the values that we stand for.
For example, I want to contribute to the lives of others, so
contribution is one of my values. Integrity, Fun, Responsibility,
Passion, Kindness, Generosity…these are some others to
consider as well. Identify values that you resonate with and
prioritise them, then you can write a life purpose which you will
be able to integrate well into your life.

Our life purpose statement is not a static thing. It can be

changed from time to time as we learn and we grow into a
bigger person. As our perspective changes, the order of priority
of our values may also change.

14 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

For example, when I was younger, I always took my health for

granted. I would have some little tummyaches and constipation
problem from time to time, but I would ignore them as soon as
it got over. Over the course of the last few years, having had a
baby of my own, my perspective on health changes dramatically.

With a new life who is dependent on me, I came to a realization

that my own health is extremely important. Without it, how am
I going to take care of my little one? I want to watch him grow
up, be his cheerleader in life as he takes on his challenges, and
celebrate his successes with him.

15 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

At the same time, his health is also important. I would rather be

spending time pondering over how I can better help him to
grow as a person, in managing his toddler emotions and
tantrums, than be spending time with him at the hospital.

This is when health rose up to the top as a priority for me.

Along the way, I realised that this is the hope of most parents.
However, not all may have found the right wisdom to deal with
their health challenges. And so, I share with them what I have
found. It becomes my calling.

So, for you today my friend, whichever stage you are at in life,
what is your life purpose? Have some time to ponder over it.

When we are on a journey in line with our purpose, the joy,

happiness and fulfilment follows us.

#2 LEARNING AND GROWING

Growing up in a very competitive academic environment in

Singapore, I felt that our main aim as students was just to
clinch an A and to graduate to the next level. Rarely was there
any focus on the love for learning.

However, because I came from a lower middle income family, I

knew that I didn’t have the option of going overseas for a
tertiary education as the financial burden was just way too
heavy. Hence, my only motivation in pushing myself in the
early years was just to get to a degree, complete it well and get a
good paying job. I didn’t understand the value of continuous

17 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

learning then, pegging the value of learning to the attainment of

a paper qualification.

However, after working for a couple of years, I started to realise.

I noticed people getting ahead, even though they did not have
the A results to start off with. I noticed that people that are able
to juggle their lives very well with successes in both at work and
at home, they may not be the typical A students we see in school.
Why is that so? It is about learning and growing.

Only by learning and growing, can we expand ourselves and our

abilities to do more and handle more. The magic is always
outside our comfort zone.

18 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

If we think about it, everyone as a developing embryo starts off

as a blank sheet of paper. Why do some kids grow up to build
huge multi-billion dollar businesses, while others just live
mediocre lives? You will get some idea, when you sit down and
have a chat with them. If you’re observant, you will notice that
their viewpoints and perspectives towards issues in life, could
actually vary by quite a fair bit.

The ones who successfully built big businesses, have definitely

grown along the way, changing their beliefs to supporting ones
which have helped them become successful.

We can learn and grow in many different areas of our lives. For
example, to excel at a career, we definitely will need to grow in
our core skill areas. Ie. An engineer will need to learn more in
their technical field, a teacher to know how to skillfully handle
students as a class.

At the same time, there are other non-specific types of learning,

like communication, networking, positive mindset, leadership,

19 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

financial management. Often, these are equally important for

us in our development journey. However, they’re not taught in
school.

What then are some ways we can continuously grow ourselves?

1) Reading

Reading is feeding and expanding our minds, fine tuning our

thought processes, and helps us to come to realizations and new
understanding about this world.

From books, we get to explore different experiences which we

may not have the chance to in our current environment. We
also get to see things from others’ point of view when they put

20 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

their thoughts on paper. We get to benefit from the years of

experience people invest into understanding specific topics like
the art of communication, or leadership. We get to use the
books as mirrors for our lives to see how we can improve
ourselves.

The benefits books bring to us, are on multiple levels. The more
we read, the more we learn. In fact, reading is one of the habits
that most successful people have as a base. Here are some
examples of successful people who are avid readers:

Warren Buffett reads 500 pages each day

Bill Gates reads 50 books per year.
Mark Zuckerberg resolved to read 1 book every 2 weeks in 2015.

21 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

As can be seen, reading is a very critical habit to bring us to our

success. There is much that we can learn from books!

If you have read until this point, give yourself a pat on your
back! That’s because you’re a reader too! And indeed this habit
will be a stepping stone towards your success. Congrats!

2) Listening

We’re so blessed in our generation that resources are so widely

available to us. Many good books have been made into audio
books such that we can maximise the use of our time during the
day to gain more learning.

For example, while we’re travelling or driving, it may be

difficult to be fixing our eyes on the pages of a book. However,
we can always an audio book to have someone read out the
22 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

book to us. In fact, google play books have a narrator option as

well!

Sharing a story about my hubby during his early days doing

sales. As he had to travel a lot driving from hospital to hospital
in a day, he would always have Jim Rohn, Earl Nightingale,
Brian Tracy, Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar, Napolean Hill and Dale
Carnegie playing from his car audio. Those were fun days for
him and his sales indeed did very well, because of all the
positive influences from these world class people.

We can even learn while sleeping. While we are sleeping, our

subconscious mind continues to function and absorb
information or signals from our surrounding. As such, we can
continue to play audio books so that we can get some of these
ideas fixed into our subconscious mind.

23 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

3) Watching Videos

Earlier this year, during the lunar new year events, my boy’s
school had set a homework for each child’s parent to sit down
and complete a lunar new year lantern with the child. Even
though I was able to make a lunar new year lantern during my
school days, but that was more than 20 years ago! I did a quick
search on youtube, and indeed, there were already available
tutorials on it.

As can be seen, anything can be learnt easily over youtube. You

may even find motivational videos, how-to videos etc over there.
So, do make full use of all these available resources to aid you in
your growth!

#3 GRATITUDE

Remember I had said earlier that I used to be a very inward

looking person who was always focussing on the negative things
in life. Do you think I was happy then? I bet you know the
answer. Life was horrible for me then.

Imagine waking up every day, nitpicking my world, being

unhappy with little things and little inconveniences which
definitely happens on a daily basis? I would even get irritated at
not getting a seat on the train because of my long journey from
home to work.

25 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

On a daily basis, I was giving away my power. My power of

being able to control my own feelings. I hated my life, but I
guess I was fortunate to not have entertained any suicidal
thoughts then.

This took a turn for the better when I got to read the book
Magic, by Rhonda Byrne (also the Author of the book Secret).

In the very first chapter, the challenge to me, was to make

gratitude a daily habit. Every single morning, I would need to
wake up and make a list of 5 things to be thankful about for the
previous day. These 5 things cannot be repeated items. Like for
example, if I have already written that I’m so thankful for a
patient and long suffering hubby, I cannot write that again
today.

26 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

By continuing this process for 30 days, we could then make it a

habit, because we’re training our minds to always look out for
the silver lining in the dark grey rainy clouds.

This has helped me to change my perspective to significant

events in my life in the past. For example, I used to resent why
we had to work so hard to get through the local university,
when there were many other easier and faster options that were
available.

However, now I realised that when I commit and work hard to

rise to the challenge during my university days, it has trained
me to become more resilient, it has developed my thinking
processes to resolve issues quicker. It is often tough times that

27 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

make us better as a person, where we learn and grow the most

from our experiences.

When I was much younger as a kid, I used to compare and

resent why I was born into a lower middle income family, while
I had friends from more well to do families and could have a lot
more as kids. I felt that my life would have been better if my
mother could be able to spend more time with me instead of
having to work to bring in an income.

After learning about gratitude, I started to see how hard my

parents worked to provide for me growing up. They even put
me through almost 15 years of piano lessons plus exams just so
that I could develop another skill, not something that all kids
get. That added up to quite a fair bit of money as well. Although
my mother had to work to supplement our family income, she
would be busy all evening helping us with our school work,
28 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

never neglecting to spend time with us. For that, I can only say
I’m grateful.

Overall, with a change in perspective, I’m a much happier

person and my hubby is one of those who has observed and is
also a beneficiary of this change.

There are many many things we can be thankful of each day,

starting with the fact that we are given a brand new day!

29 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

#4 CHERISHING TIME

From the time we arrive in this world till today, I’m sure that
you have noticed that there are many things that would have
been difference in our lives compared with other people. For
example, the countries that we were born in, our family income
level, the areas of our talents etc.

The one and only thing that is equal for everyone is the 24
hours we have in a day. The one and only thing that is certain
for everything living, is death. Everything else in between, we
get to choose how we want to spend each moment of our lives,
we get to choose whether or not we enjoy each moment of our
lives.

Well, you may be asking, why do I talk about death, a sobering

topic? Especially when this book is supposed to be about
30 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

happiness? I’m making a point here that time is a very very

precious resource that we are all given fairly. However, we may
sometimes overlook and take it for granted. By realizing that
our time may one day run out, is the best way to ensure that we
cherish it.

I’m hoping that by doing so, none of you would walk till the end
of your lives and in that last few moments recall back on your
life with regrets on things that you have not done, or things that
you have done. Regret is bitter. What I want for you is to live
moment by moment, a life of no regrets.

In an earlier article I read, here are the top 5 dying regrets of

people. We can take a good lesson from these people in
understanding what is right on top of their minds, as their time
on this earth ticks away.

31 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the
life others expected of me.

2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

Previously, I didn’t used to cherish my time very much. In fact,

even though I was not happy at work, I preferred to stay in my
comfort zone and let time tick away, not making any changes.
Year after year, my time would pass by, I did not feel much
changes to myself physiologically. As such, I just continued on.

This changed when my baby came along.

32 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

When he was born, he was only 2.87kg, a regular size for an

Asian baby. As week after week passed, he gained new abilities
fast. Within the first four weeks, he had learnt how to control
his neck very well. Subsequently, he could flip himself over.
Next, he learnt how to worm around…and then crawl. Sooner
than expected, he could walk. From lying on the bed as a
helpless infant, to the point that he could walk unassisted, it
only took him 12 months!

He taught me a very stark lesson in how quickly time was

passing by. In just 1 year, he has grown so much. What about
me? How much have I grown myself in 1 year? Nothing to shout
about at all.

In most of my 1 year periods, I have hardly changed. Without

growth, it is not just that we are not moving forward. In fact,
the world continues to move ahead. So in relative terms, we are

33 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

actually moving backwards. As a parent, I now need to live my

life as an example to the little one. Even my little boy is
progressing faster than I am, I just couldn’t accept it. That’s
what made me make a change.

For you, your motivation may not be a child. It could be others,

your parents, or your family members. However, the most
important question to ask yourself every morning is…If today
was going to be the last day you are on this earth, what would
you do?

This reminds us that we will not be eternally on this earth,

keeps us prioritizing the most important people and things in
our lives first.

34 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

#5 EVERYTHING IS WITHIN OUR

CONTROL

Some may take a view that as humans we are limited. There are
many situations which we cannot have control over. For
example, natural disasters, other events caused by other people.
Nevertheless, one thing is for sure, we can control the way we
respond and the way we view the event. This will determine if
we can turn the encounter we had into an experience and a
good learning lesson.

Average people give away their control in one or a combination

of these three ways: Complain, lay blame, justify or make
excuses. What are the differences between the three? When we
understand it more, then we will be able to catch ourselves
doing it and slowly change our habits and patterns.

35 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

1) Complain

Complaining is the expression of a dissatisfaction or annoyance

at something or someone. More often than not, people who
complain just remain there in that dissatisfaction. They do not
take any action to change things in their lives that they are not
happy with.

I used to have this habit of complaining in the past. Like I said,

little things would annoy me and in turn I would verbalize that.
However, the pain was not big enough for me to make any
changes. Yet, I didn’t know how much joy and happiness this
habit was stealing from my life.

In the process of curbing this habit, initially I would get

annoyed as well. However, I was determined to stop

complaining, so I would not express it out. I realised that as

time passed on, the same things that I would get annoyed with
no longer annoyed me. Slowly, I see positive things rather than
let my mind focus on negative ones.

2) Lay Blame

Another way in which people give away control of their lives is

when they choose to lay blame on others’ or circumstances
when things go wrong. When they do that, they will not be able
to benefit from this experience and grow from there.

The question to ask ourselves when things go wrong, is how we

can do things differently in the future to get a different outcome?
By laying blame on others’ or circumstances, we are in effect
saying that there is nothing we can do.

3) Make Excuses

Excuses are a very common way people use to release

themselves from the need to take action or take responsibility
for their own failure.

The other day, I was having a conversation with a friend. She

was unhappy with the way things were in her job. She felt that
she was under paid, that the salary she was drawing was below
the market average. At the same time, she felt unhappy at her
boss’ unrealistic expectations, sometimes even expecting her to
work on weekends.

Even as I provided a listening ear to her difficulties, I gently

suggested several possible options she could pursue to make life
different and better. In response, I received a list of reasons
why it wouldn’t work. Because of the current economic
conditions, because a new job wouldn’t allow her the same
38 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

flexibilities of timing to care for her kids, because she does not
want to travel so far to another new job, because…

Does this sound familiar to you?

Actually, many of us make excuses on a day to day basis. We are

just not conscious of it. In this case of my conversation, I
received excuses after excuses on why there was just no good
solution to the problem. Or do you think that most of the time,
it is just us standing between the solution and the problem?

If we want to live a happy life, excuses need to thrown out of the

window. If it is something we don’t like, we take action to
change. It is that simple.

As such, it is important for all of us to know that ONLY we have

the power to change our lives. We need to be the agent of
change if we wish for things to become better. Only by changing
from within, will our world also change accordingly.

#6 TREASURE LOVE

Love, in various degrees, is the beginning of many good and

wholesome things in this world. In fact, at birth, many of us are
showered with love in one way or another by people around as a
helpless baby. We are receivers of love from many people, our
family, our friends, our significant other as well as angels we
meet in our lives along the way.

Even though as we read the daily newspapers, we read of a lot

of negative news, of murders, of crimes…however, are we aware
that there are actually also many people who are constantly and
quietly spreading love in the world?

41 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

When we just do a quick search on orphanages, on google, isn’t

it that many results pop up? From there we can read the
mission and story of how the founders start up these
establishments to house children who don’t have parents.

In our everyday lives, do we notice the smiles from friendly

strangers, do we appreciate the additional concern we receive
from a colleague, do we say thank you to our family members
for the help they render us when we’re busy with other things.
Even small things like helping us wash our laundry, take our
dishes to the sink…

Take 1 minute to reflect on your day, who are the people who
have shown you love today?

Make a list of at least 5 of them…and remember to say thank

you and give them a big hug.

Besides realizing that we are loved by many, we also need to

ensure that we love ourselves, and take good care of ourselves.
Often, if you pay close attention and are aware of the voices that
pop up in our head throughout the day, you will also come to a
realization that we are often our worst critic. Be it even the
slightest mistake that we make, maybe even people outside do
not notice it, but sometimes we feel condemned about it.

Have you ever found it weird to watch a recording of yourself in

action? Whether it be a video of you talking or singing, or doing
something. The feeling of weirdness is from our self-critic. We
need to learn to analyse this voice from a more objective angle.
Is there any truth in what is being said to us? Or is it just a
small thing that we really shouldn’t be too bothered over?

Here are some simple tips to remind ourselves on how we can

love ourselves more:

7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

1) Be Patient with Yourself

At times, when we make mistakes or when we feel that we are

not good enough, we may get frustrated at our current state.
However, that is not a supportive thought to ourselves. We need
to realise that everyone needs time to learn and grow and
becoming better. We are not an exception. This will be
especially applicable in areas that we don’t have natural talent
in. We may take a while more, but we will get there.

2) Be Authentic

As we grow up, there may be a lot of societal expectations on us,

which may make us feel insecure and consequently choose to
hide up parts of us, or put on masks when we face the outside
world. Often though, these parts we hide, are what makes us
unique and just different…which may also be the gift that we
are given for this world.

3) Treat Yourself with Respect and Honor

We all deserve basic respect and honor. As such, do not tolerate

people who do not give you this basic respect. Get toxic people
out of your life, because you don’t need to put up with their
garbage, because you deserve more in life.

4) Affirm yourself every Morning

When you wake up in the morning, brush your teeth and wash
your face. Do remember to add one more step in your routine –
that is, to affirm yourself. Look at your reflection in the mirror
and repeat this several times until you feel good and strong to
take on the day. “You are Awesome, [your name]!”.

45 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

5) Curb that Ego

Our ego is basically a collection of beliefs we have about

ourselves. It may be good or it may not either. These beliefs of
ourselves have resulted in an outcome, which is the life that we
are currently living.

However, if we are not 100% satisfied with our current lives, or

if we think that it could still be improved, then some of these
beliefs will need to be changed. That’s because our beliefs shape
thinking, which determines our feeling, and result in our
actions. Our final action is what gives us our resulting life.

As such, we need to get rid of the “I am always right” or “I know

already” thinking. This is what the ego usually tells us which
gets in our way of creating a better, more fulfilling life.

#7 CELEBRATE! ALL OUR SMALL

VICTORIES IN LIFE

In our course of life, we will definitely be faced with good times

and bad times. In our journey, we will be faced with challenges
at times which may seem so big, that we may sometimes feel
overwhelmed and worn out.

One good way to make sure we don’t get into this rut is to
celebrate all our small victories!

How does that help us?

First of all, it helps us to take our focus away from the challenge.
This is because, whatever we focus on expands, and when we

47 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

focus on the challenges, it may seem so so so big that we feel

that it is so difficult to overcome. By focusing too much, we may
also take on tunnel vision, disabling us from looking at other
angles to find a solution. By celebrating our small victory, we
take our focus off the challenge. When we get back to it later, we
often find the solution easily as we can now see from a bigger
perspective.

Next, by celebrating small successes, we give ourselves a

confidence boost. Sometimes being faced with a challenge and
being unable to resolve it, we may sometimes feel less confident
and uncertain whether we have what it takes to resolve it. By
reminding ourselves about other small victories, we put our
lives into a better perspective. We do have what it takes to
resolve issues. We no longer feel overwhelmed and worn out
and gives us the motivation to move on and take on more
challenges.

48 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

Last but not least, a celebration provides us the opportunity to

take a break from life. After we have worked hard, we deserve to
take a break so that we can rejuvenate and continue the good
work.

There is a Chinese saying, 休息是为了走更远的路。What this

means is that when we rest, the reason is so that we can walk on
further. When we celebrate our small victories, it gives us a
small pit stop so that we can continue to take on the battles of
life.

So, what are some good ways we can celebrate?

Every single one of us is different, and we also enjoy different

activities. While some prefer to celebrate with a loud party,
some will tend to prefer to spend time in quietness and alone so

49 | P a g e
7 FOUNDATIONS OF HAPPYNESS │ ©2014-2017 JANICE YAP │ http://www.PositiveHappyness.com

that they can recharge. As such, there can be a wide variety of

ways people can choose to celebrate their successes. I’m just
including a few of my personal favourites here so that you can
be spoilt for choices!

1) Spa and Massage

After fighting long and hard, nothing beats having a massage to

ease the achy muscles. Especially when at times, we sit at our
desks for long hours, or for those who move around more, the
achy leg muscles.

Massage also helps to circulate our lymphatic system more and

improves our immunity! Just make sure that you don’t have too
full a meal before the massage if you’re going for a full body one.

2) Over a Yummy Meal

My personal favourite is Thai food, even though I have a low

threshold for spicy food. Choose your favourite meal and
celebrate!!

3) Small Treats for Myself

I have a sweet tooth, so little sweet treats like macaroons or

cakes, ice creams are my favourite! However, I can’t take too
much of them otherwise I’d be gaining a lot of calories. So, it’s a
once-in-a-while treat!

4) Booking a Trip to a Beautiful Beach

Looking out into the vast sea, it becomes very therapeutic for
me at times, helps me to relax. There is something about the
blue colour which helps us just feel good.

5) Check something off your Bucket List

Every one of us have things that we would like to complete

before we leave this earth. Celebrate your small successes by
completing one of these!

So, remember! Celebrate every single one of your small

victories in life, because you DESERVE it!
