Faculty Pay Structure:

Terms and Conditions of Appointments

Lecturers

a) Appointment will be on temporary basis for one year, to be assessed and renewed every
year based on their performance in teaching and research for a maximum of six years and
subject to the following:

i. They will normally be required to engage in research towards their PhD for 50% of the
time,

ii. They must make every effort to complete their PhD within six years, failing which they
may continue to work on PhD as full time or part time students without financial support
from BITS.

b) Once he/she completes the PhD, he/she can apply to BITS for the position of an Assistant
Professor if he/she chooses to. The application will be processed following the usual process
of short‐listing and interview for position of Assistant Professor. Appointment as an Assistant
Professor will not be automatic.
Assistant Professors

A fresh Ph.D. in any discipline will be eligible to be appointed as an Assistant Professor on


Probation for a period of three years. Once he/she successfully completes three years period,
his/her performance will be assessed. If appraisal is favorable, his/her appointment becomes
“regular”. If appraisal is not favorable, the appointment will normally cease to exist at the end of
six months of his/her existing term.

Associate Professors, Professors and Senior Professors

New appointment of Associate Professors, Professors and Senior Professors will be on


Probation for a period of one year. Such appointments will be made “regular” after a favorable
assessment at the end of one year. If appraisal is not favorable, temporary appointment will cease
to exist at the end of his/her existing term.

Regular vs. "temporary against a regular position"


a. The appointment of a faculty under "temporary against a regular position" may be terminated
by either side with a notice period of one month.
b. The appointment of faculty under "regular" position will be valid till he/she attains the age of
superannuation. Such a faculty will be assessed periodically and if his/her performance is found
to be "unsatisfactory" or "needs improvement" in each of the three preceding assessments,
his/her appointment will be terminated with a notice period of six months (normally).

Benefits

Allowances
HRA 40% on Basic Salary HRA is payable on 40% of basic salary per
month.
Special Allowance AED 4000/- Fixed amount payable on monthly basis.

Retirement Benefits
Gratuity As per UAE government law.

Other Benefits
Air Passage Overall limit of AED Actuals in economy class, up to a maximum of
10,000/- per academic AED 2500 per individual, limited to five
year members (self, spouse and three dependable
children, as per Institute rule) for visiting home
town (nearest International Airport). If proof of
travel is not made available or travel not availed,
can claim for AED 1500 /- per individual.
However, the overall limit for a given academic
year will be AED 10,000 only.
Annual Leave 45 days Forty five Days (Normally availed during
Summer Vacation / Winter Break)
Medical Insurance AED 4,500/- pa Includes Self, Spouse and dependable Children
and residing with staff, Actuals upto a limit of
AED 4500 /-pa.
Children’s Education 50% Tuition Fee 50% tuition fee waiver, if admitted to BITS
Waiver Pilani, Dubai Campus.
Reimbursement of One way, Actuals, subject to a limit of AED 6500
Relocation Expenses from outside UAE and AED 1,000 within UAE.
In case, the person leaves the Institute within a
year of joining, he/she has to return back the
relocation allowance. Return airfare upon
disengagement with BITS on termination of
services may be paid.

Reimbursable Allowance
(as per Institute rules)
Research initiation grant AED 20000
(One time)
Reimbursable professional AED 3,000 Per AED 3000/- per academic year towards the
development allowance Academic Year expenses on academic supplies, books, travel
etc.

Travel Allowance

Travel allowance for official visit to places in UAE Emirates will be reimbursed to faculty as per
Institute norms.

Other Leaves

Other leaves includes special casual leave, medical leave, compassionate leave, Hajj / Umrah
leave, etc.

Age of Superannuation

The age of superannuation remains sixty years, till the end of Academic year. However, a faculty
member in his/her 55th year of age will be assessed for his/her performance over the previous
five years. If the assessment is favorable, his/her age of superannuation will be revised to sixty
five years.
Extraordinary Leave (EOL) without Pay

An option to faculty will be provided to avail “extraordinary leave” (EOL) without pay for up to Two
years at a time subject to:

i. He/she avails EOL with a view to enrich his/her background and/or experience that will
benefit BITS upon his/her return to BITS,
ii. EOL will normally be available only after three years of service at BITS,
iii. The total of such EOL is limited to 20% of time spent at BITS,
iv. One would normally be required to spend three years at BITS before he/she can avail
similar paid or unpaid leave again.
v. EOL absence will not be counted for gratuity calculations.

Appraisal and Promotions

Performance appraisal and assessment for performance-linked variable pay and promotions. The
details of faculty performance appraisal system as also performance-linked pay will be made
available separately.

Recruitment Process

Other than ensuring that your application is complete and accurate, please make sure that you
are able to give a technical seminar on your teaching/research background as also on your plans
to teach and do research if you were to join BITS. Also ensure that the referees will indeed write
letters of reference if and when we write to them, briefly.

The steps given below give the process through which an application is progressed:

 Call for advertisement through newspaper for faculty position in various Departments
 Application submission by candidates through online process by visiting http://www.bits-
pilani.ac.in/dubai/careers
 Webmaster receives applications for Dubai campus and sorts out Department wise
 Department Level Scrutinizing Committee (DLSC) is informed on applications received
 DLSC committee scrutinize all applications and give their recommendations and shortlist
candidates for AV round
 Shortlisted candidate are called for AV interaction through Skype by DLSC committee
 Candidates are once again shortlisted after successful completion of AV Round by the
DLSC committee
 Next, Campus Level Scrutinizing Committee (CLS C) reviews the AV round shortlisted
candidates and recommends for the ULSC committee
 University Level Scrutinizing Committee (ULSC) calls the selected candidate for final
interview with a panel of Internal and External Experts. Interview can be taken by the
candidate in person at BITS Pilani Campus or through AV Interaction from any place.
 Offer Letter to successful candidate is issued through email
 Selected candidate expresses willingness/non- willingness and expected date of joining
the Institute through email.

Candidate will be informed in due course of time about the outcome of the application irrespective of
