Explanatory to RAL Formulations
The RAL shades were matched by using lead free, organic and inorganic pigments from Cappelle’s
pigment range. The cards of the colour register RAL 841-GL (high-gloss) served as references of our
colour matching.
The main selection criterion of the pigments in RAL-Formulations was primarily properties of the
individual pigment, which should fulfill in specific system the basic requirement of suitability to be
needed.
Three different paint systems were used to countertype the RAL shades by applying following
system specific preconditions on pigments:
Air-drying paint (Setal 270- long oil alkyd resin based on soyabean)

Economic grade of pigments

Good light- and weathering fastness

Good solvent fastness (mainly aliphatic type)

Stoving Enamel (Setal 84XX70 / Setamine US135)

Good heat resistance

Good solvent fastness (mainly aromatic type)

Good light and- weather fastness

2-Pack (Macrynal SM 515/Desmodur N 75)

Good solvent fastness

No or low influence on pot-life

Good light and- weather fastness

With these basic requirements on pigments, we matched RAL-Shades by trying to achieve:

 a match, which is very close to original RAL shade

 a maximum of opacity and
 free of metamerism.

This information is illustrated in our RAL-Formulations booklet.

The accuracy of our colour matching is issued in colouristic deviation towards to the original
RAL-Card in Cielab-Units. Additionally, information about metamerism is given in form of
Metamerism-Index (MI Index) that indicates that formulations with values up to 1 unit start to
become metamer. This has to be counterchecked with spectral curves of the RAL-shade and
Cappelle’s proposal included.
Furthermore, hiding power was determined under the respective condition of each shade at defined
pigmentation level and pigment-binder ratio. Values about opacity should be used as an orientation,
since the formulations are not optimised in their pigmentation level for opacity reasons. Improvement
to certain level may be possible by increasing the total pigmentation level in final paint.
Finally, it should be pointed out that the percentage of our pigmentation recommendation stated for
individual RAL shade might alter somewhat under the respective in-house conditions. The reason for
that is mainly variation in dispersing conditions and differences in wetting properties of various
binders. Respective corrections are therefore indispensable when our formulations are intended to
be taken over.
