GESM 325A PLATE PROBLEMS:

A. BASIC STRESS

1. A Steel plate ( ρ = 7850 kgm/ m3 ) has dimensions of 2.5m

x 1.2m x 0.1m is hoisted by a sling that has a clevis at each
end. The pins through the clevises are 18mm in diameter
and are located 2m apart. Each half of the cable is at an
angle of 320 to the vertical. For these conditions find the
shear stress in the pins.

3. An aircraft tow bar is positioned by

means of a single hydraulic cylinder
connected by a connected by a 25mm
diameter steel rod to two identical arm-
and-wheel units DEF. The mass of the
entire tow bar is 200kg, and its center
of gravity is located at G. For the
position shown, determine the stress in
the rod at E.

2. A pedal mechanism attached onto a

wire rope at AB is shown. If the force, P
is 750 N, find the diameter of the pin at
C for which the average shearing stress
in the pin is 0.040 GPa. Say that the
wire rope diameter is the same as the
pin diameter at C, determine the tensile
stress at the rope.

5. The rigid bar EFG is supported by the

truss system shown. Determine the
cross-sectional area of member AE for
which the normal stress in the member
is 15 ksi.

4. A 750mm diameter pulley is

keyed to a shaft of 50mm
diameter. If the base, b of the
key is 12mm, determine the
tension in the belt wrapped
around the pulley. Assume
tension around the belt to be the
same.
6. A horizontal beam AB supported by an inclined strut
CD carries a load P = 2600 lbs at the position shown
in the figure. The strut, which consists of two bars, is
connected to the beam by a bolt passing through the
three bars meeting at joint C. If the allowable shear
stress in the bolt is 13.5 ksi, which among the bolts at
A, C, and D have the largest diameter?

B. STRAIN

7. A mechanical link is composed of three parts, a rigid

bar ABC and two non-rigid arms BD and CE. BD is
made up of brass (E = 15 x106 psi) and has a cross-
sectional area of 0.40 in2. CE is made of aluminum (E
= 10.4 x106 psi) and has a cross-sectional area of 0.5
in2. If the deflection at BD is 7.59375 x10-3 in, find
the vertical displacements at A and CE. Determine
also the applied force, P and the force acting through
arm CE.

8. A heavy object is being raised from the sea floor by a

tug equipment with a crane and winch. The steel
cable has an effective modulus of elasticity equal to
140 GPa, and the load produces a stress in the cable
equal to 290 MPa. If the cable which is 90m long has
a maximum permissible elongation of only 20cm, will
the cable under the cited conditions snap or not?

9. A steel wire and a copper wire have equal lengths

and support equal loads, P. The moduli of elasticity
for the steel and copper are E = 29 x103 ksi and 18
x103 ksi respectively. If the wires have the same
diameter, what is the ratio of the elongation of the
copper wire to the elongation of the steel wire? If the
wires stretch the same amount, what is the ratio of
the diameter of the copper wire to the diameter of
the steel wire?
10. The horizontal rigid beam ABCD is
supported by vertical bars BE and CF and is
loaded by the vertical forces, P1 = 100kg
and P2 = 90kg acting at points A and D
respectively. Bars Be and CF are made of
P1 = 100 kg P1 = 90 kg
steel (E = 29 x103 ksi) and have a cross-
sectional areas of 22.1 in2 and 18.3 in2
respectively. The distances between points
on the bars are shown. Determine the
vertical displacements at A and D
respectively.

11. A hollow circular column of steel (E =

30,000 ksi) is subjected to a compressive
load, P as shown. \the column has length L
= 8.2 ft and outside diameter, Do = 8.0 in. If
the load, P = 110 kg, allowable compressive
stress is 8.1 ksi, and the allowable
shortening of the column is 0.025 in., what
is the required wall thickness?

12. The 4mm diameter cable BC is made of

steel with E = 200 GPa. Knowing that the
maximum stress in the cable must not
exceed 190 MPa, and that the elongation of
the cable must not exceed 6mm, find the
maximum load, P that can be applied as
shown.
