Teaching Social Studies in Intermediate Grades

Assessment #1
Essay:

1. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF LOCAL HISTORY?

Local history is the history of one’s own ancestors living in the same geographical
area. It helps children connect with the past and learn about the innumerable sacrifices
the past generations made to create a vibrant present. History is the Study of life in
society in the past, in all its aspect, in relation to present developments and future
hopes. It is the story of man in time, an inquiry into the past based on evidence, Indeed,
evidence is the raw material of history teaching and learning. It is an inquiry into what
happened in the past, when it happened, and how it happened, It is an inquiry into the
inevitable changes in human affairs in the past and the ways those changes affect,
influence or determine the patterns of life in the society. History is should be an attempt
to re-think the past. Collingwood (1945) is particularly interested in their concept of
history. History aims of helping students to understand the present existing social,
political, religious and economic conditions of the People, without the knowledge of
history we cannot have the background of our religion, customs, institutions,
administrations and so on.

2. WHAT IS HISTORY BEST DEFINITION?

History is the study of the human past as it is described in written documents left
behind by humans. The past of its complicated choices and events, participants dead
and history told, perceives to be the immutable bedrock on which historians and
archaeologists stand. But as purveyors of the past, historians recognize that the
bedrock is really quicksand, that bits of each story are yet untold, and that what has
been told is colored by the conditions of today. While not untrue to say that history is the
study of the past, here is a collection of much more clear and accurate descriptions. All
in all dealing with past events a continuous, systematic narrative of past events as
relating to a Particular people, country, period, person.
3. DISTINGUISH PRIMARY SOURCES FROM SECONDARY SOURCES.

A Primary sources are original documents, may include diaries, letters, interviews,
oral histories, photographs, newspapers, articles, government documents, poems,
novels, plays, and music. The collection and analysis of primary sources is central to
historical research, Primary Sources are immediate, first-hand accounts of a topic, from
people who had a direct connection with it. Primary sources can include:
*Texts of laws and other original documents.
*Newspaper reports, by reporters who witnessed an event or who quote people who
did.
*Speeches, diaries, letters and interviews - what the people involved said or wrote.
*Original research.
*Datasets, survey data, such as census or economic statistics.
*Photographs, video, or audio that capture an event.

While the Secondary sources were created by someone who did not
experience first-hand or participate in the events or conditions you’re researching. For a
historical research project, secondary sources are generally scholarly books and
articles. A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. Secondary
Sources are one step removed from primary sources, though they often quote or
otherwise use primary sources. They can cover the same topic, add a layer of
interpretation and analysis. Secondary sources can include:

*Most books about a topic.

*Analysis or interpretation of data.
*Scholarly or other articles about a topic, especially by people not directly involved.
*Documentaries (though they often include photos or video portions that can be
considered primary sources).

A REFLECTION: HISTORY

Many students are eager to know why historical research is important in today's
curriculum. The simple answer is that people cannot help other than to understand the
past, or they can learn from others and mistakes. Another reason to study history is not
only to see the mistakes that we can learn but also to see the good impact of the world
and culture that shapes our lives. The importance of history can be understood from the
fact that it helps us to understand the present. It provides an incredible perspective for a
variety of reasons. People almost ignored the power of history. By understanding
history, you can understand basic concepts and ideas. You can understand causality
and humanity. History helps us build relationships with events and behaviors. It clarifies
the relationship between things. With perfect historical knowledge, people can
understand behavioral attitudes and emotions.
