Miller Indices
Week 1
Objectives
Students will be able to…
• Use the Miller indice notation to
determine planes and directions within a
semiconductor crystal.
Miller Indices
• We can identify planes and directions
within a crystal using Miller Indices
– [] = crystal directions
– <> = equivalent directions
– () = crystal plane
– {} = equivalent planes (equivalent planes
have the same atomic arrangement)
Identifying Crystalline Planes using
Miller Indices Notation
Example Problem: For the plane drawn, note the
crystalline plane using Miller Indice notation.

Equivalent Planes and Directions
Planes are equivalent
when the atoms on the
plane have the same
atomic arrangement.
1. *Given a cubic lattice, indicate how many and list the equivalent planes
associated for the following: (a) {110}, (b) {111}
