Session 3 – Kinematics: 2D Motion Student ID :

Homework #1 Class :

Instructions:
• Show your steps and calculation clearly and systematically. Use g = 9.8 m/s2
• Handwrite your answer on paper. Scan and convert into a single-file PDF (i.e. using CamScanner)
and upload to ACIS with this filename format: Class_A_Physics_S3_HW_Ihsan_Pramanda.pdf
• Submit before Thursday, 24 September 2020, 11.59 PM (ACIS timestamp).

A. Vector Operation

1) Three vectors are shown in below. Their magnitudes are given in arbitrary units.

(a) Determine B – A and A – B, then compare your results and see if they are opposite.
(b) Determine (i) A – B + C (ii) A + B – C and (iii) A – 3B

B. Projectile Motion

2) An extreme-sports enthusiasts jumps from a 910-m cliff by running horizontally off the top with speed
4.0 m/s and enjoys a free fall until she is 150 m above the valley floor, at which time she opens her
parachute. (a) Sketch a diagram of the situation, indicate all the known and unknown information. (b)
How long is the jumper in free fall? Ignore air resistance. (c) what is her vertical velocity when she opens
her chute? (d) How far from the cliff is this jumper when she opens her chute?

3) A rescue plane wants to drop supplies to isolated mountain climbers on a rocky ridge 235 m below. The
plane is traveling horizontally with a speed of 250 km/h (a) Sketch a diagram of the situation, indicate
all the known and unknown information. (b) how far in advance of the recipients (in the horizontal
distance) must the supplies be dropped? (c) Draw the velocity vectors (v, vx, and vy) of the supplies right
before it touches the ground then determine the magnitude and direction of v!

4) A long jumper leaves the ground at 45° above the horizontal and lands 8.0 m away at the same elevation
when she took off. (a) Sketch a diagram of the situation, indicate all the known and unknown
information. (b) What is her take-off speed v0 at the given angle? (c) How long she spent time in the air
until landed? (d) How high does she go? (e) Draw her velocity vectors (v, vx, and vy) at t = 1 s after jumping
and then determine the magnitude and direction of v!
