EX/ME/ 1/124/2016 B, MECH. ENGG. EXAMINATION, 2016 (1*Year, 2™ Semester) FLUID MECHANICS- | Time : 3 hours Full Marks: 100 Answer any five (5] questions All questions carry equal marks ‘4(a) What is Newton's Law of of viscosity? Is it applicable for all types of fluid? 5 1(b) For a curved submerged surface how do you locate the point of application of the hydrostatic force? 5 ‘1(b) A radial rate retains 5 m of water above the crest of a dam as shown in figure. Find the resultant water force on the gate per unit length. 10 2(a) A solid cylinder of diameter 30 cm and a height of 1.20 m is to float in water with its axis vertical. Determine its stability if the relative density of the cylinder material is 0.5. 10 2(b) What do you mean by ‘metacenter’? For a prismatic floating body obtain the conditions of stability 10 3(a) Give an example of a flow which is unsteady but uniform. With help of suitable examples from real life, explain when you consider fluid flow as 1-D, 2-D or 3-D flow. 5 3(b) In case of an unsteady flow will a streamline coincide with the pathline? Explain your answer. 5 3(c) Two pipes of 0.6m and 0.2m diameters are connected by a smooth transition bend making an angle of 75 degree between the two pipes. When a discharge of 0.4 ms of water is flowing through this bend, the pressure on the upstream larger diameter pipe is 200 kPa. Assuming the bend to be horizontal, calculate the force on it. 10 4(a) What diameter of a semicircular channel will have the same discharge as a rectangular channel of width 2.0m and depth 1.2m? Assume the bed slope and Manning's co-efficient, n are same for both 10 44(b) What is the significance of Froude number in the analysis of open channel flow? 4 4(c) Show that the discharge per unit width of a rectangular channel is maximum when the specific energy is minimum. 6 Page 1of 2 5(a) Explain clearly the significances of the assumptions made while deducing the expression for measuring discharge using a V-notch weir. 5 5(b) Explain the relative advantages and disadvantages between a venturimeter and an orificemeter. 5 5(c) Three pipes are connected in parallel between two reservoirs having a difference in water level elevation of 12m. The details of the pipes are as below. Estimate the discharge in each pipe. Neglect minor losses. 10 Pipe | Diameter fom] [Length [m] | F_ 1 40 1000 | 0.022 2 15 800 | 0.018 3 12 950 | 0.020 (a) What are the three variables plotted In Moody's Diagram? 2 6(b) When do you consider a flow not to be fully-developed?
