Scouts
When one thinks of camping, many people
When one thinks of camping, many people
think of the scouting organisation started in
England by Robert Baden-Powell.
Originally a spy, an officer in the British
Army and the author of books about miliary
scouting, he held the first camp for boys in
1916 where he tried out some of the
techniques mentioned in his book, Scouting
for Boys. From there interest increased
hugely and scout groups appeared all over
the country.
He got permission from his friend Rudyard
Kipling to use the characters from Kipling's
Jungle Book stories so the leader of a scout
group is called Akela, after the wolf pack
matriarch, and the other scout leaders
have names like Baloo, Bagheera and Rikki
Tikki Tavi.
Scouts earn different badges for proficiency
shown in tying knots, orienteering and basic
woodcraft. Their motto is "Be prepared".
