Extreme Ironing (also called EI) is an extreme
sport and a performance art in which people
take ironing boards to unusual locations and iron
items of clothing. According to the Extreme
Ironing Bureau, extreme ironing is "the latest
danger sport that combines the excitement of
an extreme outdoor activity with the
satisfaction of a well-ironed shirt."Part of the
attraction and interest the media has shown
towards extreme ironing seems to centre on the
issue of whether it is really a sport or not. Most
people don't take it seriously.
Some locations where such performances have
taken place include a mountainside of a difficult
climb; a forest; in a canoe; while skiing or
snowboarding; on top of large bronze statues; in
the middle of a street; underwater; in the middle
of the M1 Motorway; while parachuting; and
under the ice cover of a lake. The performances
have been done solo or by groups.
A new concept of ironing has been developed
that includes both bungee jumping and ironing
clothing. Bungee ironing is what some call the
ultimate in the thrill of extreme ironing.

Touching the Void


Touching the Void is an incredible story of survival
in extreme conditions. It tells the story of two
mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates and
their disastrous climb of the 6,344 metre (20,813
feet) high Siula Grande in Peru. On their way down
the mountain, Simpson fell down an ice cliff and
broke his leg. The pair did not have any fuel so
they could not light a fire. Because of bad weather,
they needed to climb down the 3,000 metres to
their base camp. Yates tied a rope round Simpson
and started to lower him, but it was getting dark
and he lowered him off a cliff. Yates could not see
or hear what was happening and Simpson could not
climb back up the rope. When the snow around
Yates started to collapse, he made a terrible
decision.They were both about to die so he did the
only thing possible. He cut the rope.
Yates then dug himself an ice cave where he spent
the night.The next day he began to climb down
again. He couldn’t find Simpson’s body but he
supposed he was dead and he continued down the
mountain alone.
Meanwhile, Simpson was not dead. He had survived
the 150- metre fall and landed in a crevasse.
When he woke up, he saw that the rope was cut
and realized that Yates thought that he was dead.
Therefore he had to save himself. It was impossible
for Simpson to climb up to the entrance of the
crevasse so his only choice was to lower himself
deeper into the crevasse and hope that there was
another way out. After lowering himself, Simpson
found another small entrance and climbed back onto
the glacier.From there he took 3 days hopping on
one leg, with no food and almost no water, to get
to the base camp, just before Yates left.No one

could believe it.
Many people consider it the most amazing act of
mountain survival ever. Simpson later wrote a best-
selling book, which then became a documentary.

England by Robert Baden-Powell.
Originally a spy, an officer in the British
Army and the author of books about miliary
scouting, he held the first camp for boys in

the country.
He got permission from his friend Rudyard
Kipling to use the characters from Kipling's
Jungle Book stories so the leader of a scout

have names like Baloo, Bagheera and Rikki
Tikki Tavi.
Scouts earn different badges for proficiency
shown in tying knots, orienteering and basic
woodcraft. Their motto is "Be prepared".
