D) Describe future prospects for employment in this field. (What is the need
for this job in the future as technology changes and advances?)

this field? (What is the need for
- 620 job openings are projected to be available
this job in the future?) from 2016-2025 (with the majority of job
openings available in 2016)
- 66.7% (410 job openings) of the 620 available
jobs is due to retired workers
-34.1% (210 openings) is due to economic

- Although the projected numbers and prospect
of job openings for this career is minimal, I do
believe that there will be a need for this job in
the future. Not many people consider becoming a
railway conductor as a career choice, so I think
that competition will be scarce. Furthermore,
railway companies will need to find people to
replace their current railway conductors when
they are ready to retire.

Think about some of the goals you’ve set for yourself at the beginning of the
school year. Think about some of the goals you’re currently working on. What are
some challenges that you’re currently facing in achieving those goals? How will
achieving these current goals help you to achieve your career goals?
I am very happy to report that I am on track to achieve my goals; however, the
biggest challenge for me right now is posed by COVID-19. Thanks to this
pandemic, my mobility has been restricted, and the opportunities to seek
internships in my chosen field has dwindled. Nevertheless, I have managed to get
in touch with some research advocacy groups (thanks to one of my connections in
the field) who arranged for several seminars and online workshops with scientists
via Zoom. My involvement with SAIL Academy through completing many of my
high school courses online gave me a huge moral boost; and made me believe that
finishing high school at the age of 16 is an attainable endeavour.
All the activities I am engaged in right now are geared towards strengthening my
profile to apply to UBC; and hopefully get a scholarship that could alleviate some of
the financial burdens on my parents’ shoulders. The internships and learning ASL
(American Sign Language) will no doubt give me an advantage over other
applicants to UBC, since my skills and knowledge will prove to be of great service
to the program, the university and the industry later on.
