Task/assessment brief:

Supermarket industry is an industry with a rapid growth in the world and even within Sri Lanka. There are
many private companies such as Cargills Food City, Keells Super, Arpico Super and state owned
companies such as Sathosa. Walmart, Aldi, Dollar Stores are some of the leading supermarket chains in
the world.

Complete following tasks by studying the operations of Supermarket industry. Tasks can be managed with
secondary data, there’s no requirement to gather primary data. You may use different newspaper articles,
research articles, annual reports of different companies or any other academically sound secondary data
sources to gather information. You should support your answers with relevant examples from known
contexts/ organizations to elaborate your answers. Minimum of 10 -15 references should be used from
accepted required reading, recommended reading and recommended journals. Referencing and in-text
citations should be done strictly using Harvard Referencing style.

1. Cost, quality, flexibility, speed and dependability are operational performance criterions that an
organization can prioritize in designing an operations strategy. In designing this operations strategy,
the organization should carefully study their business strategy as the operations strategy should link
with the business strategy (Stevenson, 2009). Discuss each of these criterions, their significance to
organizational competitiveness with examples from the supermarket industry. (20 Marks)

2. Indicate how and why following factors are important to the success of a supermarkets.
a. Capacity planning (10 Marks)

3. Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma are some of the approaches that can be used in
managing quality in the organization (Reid & Sanders, 2011). Examine how these quality management
approaches are useful to supermarkets in delivering their services. (20 Marks)

4. Discuss how the seven types of wastes referred in lean management can be used by a supermarket to

improve their processes. (10 Marks)

5. All projects despite the size of the project, require some degree of planning. Critical Path Method
(CPM) is a technique that can be used to plan projects effectively. (Slack and Brandon-Jones, 2019).
Given below is a list of activities, predecessors and the duration of a training project to be conducted
to a group of employees in a supermarket to improve their efficiency.

section for bicycles. Given the following product structure and inventory information of assembling
bicycle at a bicycle manufacturing company. Develop a MRP in order to complete 120 units of bikes
by the start of week 8. You may develop the MRP in an excel sheet and paste it as a figure to your
portfolio. You are responsible for a clear presentation. (15 Marks)

design the operations of a number of businesses, from legal requirements, equipment sourcing,
operating, supply chain management, staffing and risk assessment and management activities.
