Question 1. Consider your own opinion regarding the Freedom of expression. Justify your
opinion based on the information provided in sources 1. In your answer you must:

● consider the perspectives expressed in sources 1 regarding freedom of expressions

● present your own opinion
● give reasons or evidence to support your opinion.

Freedom of expression is a principle in which people have rights, power and chance to express
their opinions, ideas freely through speech without being censorship, hesitated or delayed.

Free speech and Paradox of tolerance is closely related. For example some days back in United
States, People had tolerated Trump a lot that they reached the limit of tolerance. For this reason
they held protests and objections on Trump’s leadership by speaking up and using their right and
power of freedom of expression. There was also a social protest on internet.

I believe that nothing is bad or good, it’s how we use it, either in a positive way or a negative
way. Some people who are creating violence on the internet and restricting their rights or
abilities to express their opinions and ideas on internet. This created much violence on social
media as people were claiming that they are harassed on social platforms. They held protests to
make the government take serious steps to protect the rights of those who are offended on the
internet, therefore internet censoring can play an important role for the ones who are offended on
the internet.

The global internet freedom can be seen by percentage, which is helping us in predicting the
restrictions over socializing on internet. Moreover, these statistics tell that approximately more
than 68% of the countries have restricted access over websites and social platforms. 31% of the
internet is free, 22.7 % is partially free, 34.3% not free and only 12% of the countries have no
access to internet. The percentage shows that the freedom of expression is declining day by day.

“I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say”. This line states
that every person has the right and ability to express opinions and speak freely as it is essential to
bring a change in the society or in a community.

There should be freedom of speech of internet for all people living around the globe. As it is
their right to speak freely and convey their thoughts and ideas for a better environment.
However, people should be careful before uploading something which is offended someone on
pointing someone individually. Internet censoring should be practiced as through this there will
be no mean comments or protests which creates criticism.
Question 2. Select one key concept used in statement of inquiry. Justify your answer. You
must include an example for your key concept.

“Online activism has led to innovative approaches to control the public's relationship with
their civic responsibility and support change”.

Relationship:

The statement of inquiry uses the key concept of relationship along with online activism. It
highlights the relationship of different communities and societies. The concept of relationship is
highlighted in all the sources in many ways. The relationship of refugees with the legal aid and
donations to support them is also highlighting the key concept. Moreover, the relationship of
tolerant and intolerant societies are discussed in the sources.

Question 3. Choose one mathematical related concept that is required for internet funding.
Justify your answer. You must include an example for your related concept.

Change:

The statement of inquiry integrated the related concept ‘change’ along with online activism. The
concept of change is connected and linked with all the sources in one or another way and
highlights the importance of how it brings change in the society for betterment. Freedom of
expression should be a right of every individual, as their opinions and ideas can bring a change in
the society which might result in many benefits. For example in reference 7, the girl from
humanitarian opposes the refulegal. I believe that the girl is not spreading hate comments, she is
just giving her opinion and idea that asylum system is not fair and we should first fulfill the
needs of homeless people who are dying due to search for shelter and starvation.

Question 4. Explain how to convince people to make different decisions. In your answer

 integrate elements from mathematics and individual and societies

 use evidence from the PRM to support your argument
 provide a conclusion
OR
Describe how most of the time people act irrationally, but they do this in a predictable
way. In your answer

Nudges are tiny hints or persuasive techniques, which push us to reach a decision and leave all
the options behind to bring slight changes in our environment or lifestyle. We are forced to make
decisions under pressure but we believe that it is for our betterment and improvement in life.

Figures and words play an important role in decision making, these figures and words persuade
us to take decisions in a predictable way. The nudging of things in persuasive manner makes
individuals think that they are on the right path. However, this is not always true. These nudges
are sometimes beneficial but mostly they are only beneficial for the ones who are nudging us.

An article by Dan Ariely states that people make same mistakes again and again in predictable
ways. He gives examples of people in the field of marketing. His article includes,” the
phenomenon of people making the same mistakes time and again in predictable ways, such as
buying warranties they do not need, succumbing to peer pressure, and spending more money on
expensive indulgences than they budget for. In short, people behave irrationally, but predictably
so.”

In one of the of nudge theory techniques, when people were asked same questions but with
different numbers, different numbers resulted in slight changes in their responses. The first
question was, “Is the number of refugees in the world more or less than 50 million?” and the
second question was, “Is the number of refugees in the world more or less than 2 million?”.
Statistics had shown that the people who were asked the first question responded with a higher
number than those asked the second question. This shows that the bigger the number, the bigger
the response comes from the audience. Therefore, numbers plays important roles in our lives.

In reference 3, a company is fundraising to support refugee camps around the world. The online
funding sponsorship websites such as Kiva and Just Giving developed a new technique of
displaying the amount of money raised along with the target in percentage. This way of
displaying information in percent pushes or nudges the people to donate and bring the scale
closer to the 100% mark. Therefore, numbers and figures play important role in our daily lives.
The use of percentage and numbers make better understanding of things in an easy way.
Question 5. Evaluate the infographics to show legal aid support. In your answer you must:

● identify the advantages of this method

● identify the disadvantages of this method
● suggest times when it would be both useful and not useful
● consider the accuracy of such an application both mathematically and in a real-life
context

Infographics are graphical and visual representation of information, knowledge and data in a
creative and innovative way. In reference 6, legal aid infographic is used to present the monthly
legal aid cost for refugees. The legal aid cost shown on the infographic is $ 7 980, which is
distributed in different sects such as lawyer, accommodation, food and water, Interpreter and
mediation.

This way of representing information is a very useful tool. It conveys the information in a clear
and convenient manner. Infographics have the ability to transform a boring piece of collection,
data, statistics, facts, figures and information in an impressive and stunning way. They are
persuasive, eye catchy, easy to link and enables us to connect to the target audience. The main
purpose of making these infographics is to make learning easier, less time consuming and more
memorable.

A good infographic will consume a lot of time in collecting and merging all the facts, statistics,
data, figures and information in one layout. Moreover, in designing a good and attractive
infographic, it will require loads of cost. Presenting all of the information in one layout will be
hard and sometimes due to the small paragraphs or bullet points, the information or data is not
conveyed in a clear and focused way.

Infographics can be used to sum up a huge amount of information in one layout with pitchy
phrasing and colorful theme, which can attract people towards it. However, this pitchy phrasing
and colorful theme of the infographics can allow people to take serious topics very lightly and
unimportant.

This way of presenting information involves mathematics because it is all about statistics and
numbers. Through this application we can convert the cost of legal aid in percentage and we can
also construct a pie chart with the help of mathematics.
