Plot for Depth of Penetration and Kinetic Energy

Fig. (1) and (2) shows the DOP and kinetic energy of the impactor as it penetrate through the
plate of 10mm thick made of aluminum. The impactor with initial velocity of 150 m/s penetrate
up to 5mm of thickness of the plate after that it losses it’s velocity and rebound, as the fig. (2)
shows after 0.07msec impactor lose it’s all kinetic energy. Similarly for the case where the
initial velocity of the impactor is 175m/s , in this case the impactor goes up to 7mm thickness of
the plate and loss all its kinetic energy. (Similarly we have simulate for higher velocity as the
critical velocity is higher than the 175m/s )

Aluminium.

made of Aluminium
Fig.(3) and (4) shows the DOP and kinetic energy of the impactor as it penetrate through the
plate of 10mm thick made of ceramic. The impactor having 240m/s of initial velocity can
penetrate through 9mm of the ceramic plate and reduces it’s all kinetic energy. So we conclude
from the FEM simulation that the critical velocity of the ceramic plate is more than 240m/s.

made of ceramic.

After seeing the above results we can say that the critical velocity of ceramic plate is more than
the aluminum. (I didn’t complete the simulation of other material so didn’t include the other
results)
2. Stress contour on the damage zone:

The stress contour of sigma_zz will be as follows but it is quite different from the contour which
is in the thesis of Mr. Aashish. So I think I need some guidance in this.
