Timing belt: removal/installation


Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:

Always fit a new timing belt after removal

Coolant pump renewal is recommended after timing belt removal

Check the tensioner and idler pulleys; renew if necessary

Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation

Check the belt(s) for cracks, fraying, wear and oil contamination

Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment

Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction

General

Removal
Disconnect the battery

Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the engine upper cover

Drain the coolant

Remove the right-hand front wheel

Remove the noise insulation cover

Remove the wheel arch cover lining

Remove the coolant expansion tank and place it aside

Remove the timing belt upper cover

Disconnect the coolant pipe

Support the engine

Remove the engine support bolts
General
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Remove the engine support bracket bolt(s) A, B, C

Raise the engine until it leaves the engine supports

Remove the engine mount

Mark the TDC position at the crankshaft gearwheel

Loosen the tensioner

Remove the timing belt

Fit the timing belt onto the crankshaft gearwheel
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal
Fit the timing belt onto the tensioner pulley

Fit the timing belt onto the camshaft gearwheel and coolant pump

Fit the timing belt onto the idler pulley last

Check the position of the tensioner

Turn the tensioner pulley clockwise

Until the notch is above the indicator

Turn the tensioner pulley clockwise

Until the notch is aligned with the indicator

Tighten the tensioner pulley nut 25 Nm

Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns

Note: The last 45° of rotation must be carried out without pausing

Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1

Check the timing belt tension

Check the timing marks

Refit the timing belt lower cover 9 Nm
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal
Refit the crankshaft pulley

Check the position of the crankshaft pulley

Renew the bolt(s)

Stage 1: 10 Nm

Stage 2: 90°

Check the timing marks again

Engine mount to body:

Renew the bolt(s)

Stage 1: 40 Nm

Stage 2: 90°

Note: Align the engine support A=16mm, B1= B2
