Definitions For the main terms used in this Standard the definitions in JIS Z 8103 apply, and the rest of the terms shall be as follows: (1) height gauge The measuring instrument capable of reading the distance be- e iweon the measuring face of seriber and the reference face of base by the graduation of main scale or counter, and vernier scale or dial scale, or by an electronics type digital indication, when the slider with a jaw to which a scriber is attached slides along the pillar standing vertical to the base, (2) yvernier scale That scale for reading the main scale graduations in further ‘subdivision, and it is obtained by dividing the (n — 1) graduations of the main scale graduations into n or -}- equal parts. It is also called the auxiliary scale. (8) dial scale That disk scale for reading by the rotating pointer, magnifying the travelling amount of the slider mechanically by gears or the like. (4) mechanical type digital indication That numerical indication to detect the travelling amount of the slider on the basis of the main scale and to express this by converting and counting mechanically (hereafter referred to as “counter"). In this case, the dial scale may also be used together for reading the decimal part of the length. Marking The marking shall be in accordance with the following: The height gauge shall be marked with the following information respectively on conspicuous places. (a) Maximum measuring length (b) Scale interval, minimum reading value or minimum indication amount (©) Manufacturer's name or abbreviation 16. Matters to be attended on handling As regards the handling of the height gauge, the following attentions shall be required principally. (1) Since the beight gauge has no device to make the measuring force constant, measurement shall be made by an appropriate and uniform measuring foree. Particularly when the scriber has been attached extending forward, the error of reading is liable to be increased, so that it should be preferable to attach the scriber by drawing back to the root as near as possible. e@ (2) When the height gauge has been placed on a surface plate, it should be preferable to use under the condition of free from impedimental play in prac- tice on the reference surface of base. (8) For that of electronics type digital indication, it shall be necessary to consider sufficiently that a part of a single numeral at the portion of one place of final place of the indicated numeral becomes ambiguous. Furthermore, particular attention shall be necessary for its working en- vironment. For example, magnetic field, electric field, humidity, ete. are in- ° fluential on the functions of electronics parts.
