The study and analysis include a current traffic characteristics, network configuration, etc. This phase makes clear the baseline of a planning policy of LAN. (1) Current Traffic characteristics ‘When migrating a current job from current system to a LAN environment, understand the present job characteristics (the volume of peak traffic) as accurate as possible, One of the major cases of LAN migration is shown as follows. (2) Network Configuration The purpose of this phase is to clarify bottlenecks of the current network system and make use of the result to a new system. ‘The point of study and analysis of network systems is shown above. (3) Current Problems Investigate the current system problem fom the result of study and analysis. The problems are usually classified into performance, reliability, security, economy, and usage. 12 All Rights Reserved, Copyright (2) 2003, Hitachi Information ‘Academy Co, Lid Chapter] Consideration for LAN Construction ® Requirement Analysis Rem Contents Target job ‘sobs to be networked + Other divisions’ use Performance | Response lime to be required Reliability = Reliability in case of network trouble [Security + Security Operation * Service hours ——____I 1.2.2 Requirement Analysis Investigate user’s requitements and make clear the requisite of system planning. The table shows the typical patterns of LAN system configuration. (2) Size and Scope of LAN Introduction Consider the size of LAN to be introduced. (a) Small scale LAN system *LAN consists of several WS/PCs up to ten. Only user division introduces and operates LAN. A certain rule is necessary when LAN is connected with other division. (b) Medium scale LAN system *LAN consists of 30-50 WS/PCs. *IT division should take care of LAN when it is connected with other network or MF system. (© Large scale LAN system “LAN consists of up to several hundreds of WS/PCs. “LAN reaches whole building or whole organization . Therefore IT division or LAN expert should take care of the system. + Large amount of investment is needed to establish LAN system. (@) Step-up method Introduce a small scale LAN first, and then enlarge the LAN. It is also necessary to consider how to enlarge. 15 ATI Righis Reserved, Copyright (€) 2003, Hitech Inormation Academy Co, Lad Chapterl Consideration for LAN Construction Planning Policy * Scope of LAN introduction * Performance Guideline + Reliability Guideline + Security Guideline + Operation Guideline (3) Performance Standard (@) Consider-a performance standard on each job, especially response time. (b) LAN performance is decided by that of an end system such as MF, WS, PC and transmission time on a network. Classify the types of traffic due to each job, As for a cliont server model, investigate the access frequency to servers. “File, Printer, Database share Transaction processing ‘Interactive processing “File transfer “E-mail (4) Reliability Standard {a) The followings are reliability standard to answer cach requiring factor. “Number of troubles : the number of service stopped in a fixed time due to error. “Time of recovery : the time took to recover a job which is interrupted due to error, (0) Give a priority to each job. (5) Security Standard Consider a security standard to each job. Give a priority to each job when there is no fixed rule as a countermeasure. priority 1 : Access prohibition by a password Priority 2 : Establish access authority such as Refer, Update, Addition priority 3 : Free access 16 All Rights Reserved, Copyright (€) 2003, Hitachi faformetion Academy Co, Ttd Chapterl Consideration for LAN Construction Network System Configuration pee: Web Server do G \, (=, Flerprinter | disever | 1.3.1 Consideration for System Configuration (1) System environment for application @ Hardware The number of clients and servers and their hardware specification. @os Windows, UNEX/Linux, etc, Necessary function and specification. @ Application File/printer share function, mailing system, application system. ~ Client/server system ~ Web application Hosts and end systems (2) Network environment ® Network equipment Consider LAN access method, network configuration. ® Cable facility Confirm cabling system and existing cables and the building facility. ® Communication services Consider communication services when introducing inter-LAN connection or the Intemet connection. ‘AML Right Reserved, Copyright (2) 2003, Staci formation Academy Co, Lad
