1.3.2 Introduction/management of LAN
(2 Introduction of LAN
Decide who introduce LAN, i.e. end users or IT personnel. Consider the
followings.
Selecting vendor, LAN cabling, ardware/software installation,
connection testing, user environment setup, etc,
(2) Operation and management of LAN
‘There are five operation and management items as follows.
Configuration management, error management, sccurity management,
performance management, and accounting management.

1.4 Design of LAN
Design and evaluate a cabling, address, etc, based on the system
planning of LAN.
() LAN Cabling Design
Decide the cabling of LAN considering the location of servers and clients
ina floor, building, campus, etc.
(2) LAN Address Design
Design and consider address and management of TCP/IP.
(3) End System Layout Design
Design the end system location and layout.
Prepare tables and figures of layouts based on the preceding results.

2.1.1 Ethernet
(1) CSMA/CD method
‘The CSMA/CD method is a network access method in which devices that are
ready to transmit data first check for the vacancy on the channel before
transmitting data.
® Baseband transmission system: Only one signal can run at a time on a channel.
@® Control of the right to transmit the signal is required.
+ The carrier is monitored.
+ Collisions are detected and retransmissions are performed,
‘The advantages of the CSMA/CD method are that the access control method is
simple and entails low cost and that a number of products employing this method
are presently on the market.

(2) 10BASES, 1OBASE-T, 1OBASEE-F (Ethernet)
10BASES is an adaptation of the Ethernet standard for LANs that uses the co-
axial cable as the transmission medium. The co-axial cable has the disadvantages
of high cost and difficulty of cable laying lay but gives the advantages of
immunity to noise.
10BASE--T is an adaptation of the Ethemet standard for LANS that uses, the
unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable as the transmission medium. Thi twisted
pair cable has the advantages of low cost and ease of cable Jaying but suffers the
disadvantages of susceptibility to noise.
JOBASE-F uses the optical fiber cable as the transmission medium. The optical
fiber cable is immune to electrical noises and allows long-distance transmission
but suffers the disadvantage of high cost.
