Qualitative Research Methods for Public

Health
INVESTIGATION REPORT AND SHORT PRESENTATION

PRE-INTERVIEW STEPS

Step 1
Introduction

The health in any region is the key consideration for the citizens, more than half of the
Australians rating their health as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’, half of the Australians suffer from
chronic diseases including asthma, arthritis, back pain, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease, mental health conditions, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These diseases together
accounted for 87% of the total deaths in Australia in 2015.

Of these diseases, diabetes has become a key concern for the public health as its prevalence

has increased 3 times over the last 25 years (AIHW, 2018). Diabetes leads to other chronic

diseases and impacts the individuals’ life to a large extent- The patients have high rates of

physical limitations, disability and psychological distress which restrict their economic

participation (ABS, 2016).

AIHW (2016) identified that there is a huge impact of the lifestyle choices on diabetes

prevalence, and by reducing the risk factors like heavy drinking, excess weight, smoking,

high blood pressure and physical inactivity, a significant disease burden can be prevented in

Australia.

Research Question:
The background of the study topic emphasizes to find out an answer to the fact that there must be
some natural treatments for diabetes that reduces or controls the disease to an extent because of
the constant consumption of insulin and other allopathy treatments making the patients
permanently medicated.

What are the natural treatments to Diabetes and to which extent are they effective & beneficial?

Interview Questions:

The above research question will be answered by conducting an interview with four participants
(parents of friends) who were diagnosed with diabetes and they claim to have gone through
natural treatments after the diagnosis of diabetes.

Dear participant:

diabetes?
Step 2
REFLECTION ON INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE:
I went through interviewing four individuals and delivering the question and noting the answers
and views out of them is indeed a mind storming thing but the research question in itself was
quite important for me to find out an answer to because of the hazards for a diabetic patient that
can be highlighted always in a crowd due to his/her diet and dangers he/she has.
I can improve on the intellectuals that should have been strong enough to take an interview for
quickly addressing and noticing the answers provided by the intervenes.
There was no need to explain the questions instead for one or two, the delivery of questions was
strong I found and the participants were engaged to response over the questions I had with the
courage to share their experiences and views.
I found myself well delivering the questions in form of raising the concern for which the
participant was keen to reply and share the respective view.
As an overall reflection to the interview it is no doubt a mind storming activity for me & the
research question is of quite important in nature for me to find out an answer to because of the
hazards for a diabetic patient who are highlighted always in any group of gathering due to their
conscious diet and dangers they face for wounds and all.

THEMING & CODING:

The section suggests the sorting and organization of data I gathered through interviews and is
explaining through five headings that depict the phases of organizing qualitative data of my
research question.
1. Transcribe the data
The four set of transcripts depicted some results that are taken into consideration an average to
four participants. The quick go through and identifiable set of data can be read out in the later
section immersion of data. As all the data gathered through interviews contains relevant and
irrelevant at the same time. There is an analysis of what is closer to the answer of our research
question as provided by the participants and the immersion section contains an overall view of
what was the answer on average by four of participants with which I conducted the interview.

2. Immersion, grouping & coding:
I. Please share with us how and when you were diagnosed with diabetes?
The average duration of diabetes individuals was diagnosed with is between 8 to 14 years,
11years on average. “A rough and tough lifestyle surrounded by the daily pros and cons making
us unconscious about what we are intaking appears to be the thing that a gradual decline in
health and symptoms when made us consult a doctor, we were diagnosed with diabetes at an
initial stage.” As endorsed by more than one participant. I coded for how you were diagnosed
with the disease as follows:
-the normal lifestyle with no concerns of sugar as 001N
-a predictable lifestyle (inherited diabetes) as 001P
- inherited diabetes but with a normal daily life as: 001NP
And the duration of diabetes as an emergent coding was as follows:
-Year# as duration.
The answers were as follows:

Individual 1
1 001N8
2 002N10
3 003NP12
4 004N14

AVERAGE
RESULT NORMAL LIFESTYLE, 11 YEARS ON AVERAGE

II. What was your lifestyle before being diagnosed with diabetes?
A casual lifestyle with choosy diet was normally being followed by all. Those whose reasoning
for diabetes was the intake of more sugar and carbs consumption were keen to suggest the
lifestyle should have been safer but there were individuals with inherent diabetes who had not
been careful in following a particular life style. In conclusion before the disease each of them
was following a casual lifestyle. Grouping and the coding can be seen in the above table as on
average a predictable life was only one exception and a normal lifestyle is common before being
diagnosed with diabetes.

III. What was the first recommendable treatment for you when you consulted the doctor?

When diagnosed with diabetes, the first is always to consult a doctor at a hospital and following
the same the normal and most recommended by doctors is to cease usage of sugar and other
hazardous intakes while making use of medicine on daily routine is the ultimate goal to control
diabetes.
The grouping of the question is as follows:
-Medication M101
-Diet Control D501
-Exercise E201

Individual 3
1 D501
2 D502
3 E2D503
4 D504

AVERAGE RESULT D501

IV. What were the most recommendable treatments for you with respect to all the medicated
consultancy you received?

The most recommendable treatment is always to cease using sugar and other hazardous
intakes while making use of medicine on daily routine is the ultimate goal to control diabetes.

The key is to control diabetes by taking a conscious diet for ever after.

V. For which treatment you opted for? & what were the grounds for opting?
Opted for the same as this is something followed by all diabetic patients in surrounding and the
first try after being diagnosed is to follow those who are fighting best with the ailment and what
is recommended by doctor so this is something that should have been followed in any case along
with exercise and proper diet.

These are almost same as the most recommended ones.

VI. What are your views about the natural treatments to Diabetes and to which extent are
they effective & beneficial?
They haven’t heard of any natural cures for diabetes as far as they know, the only treatment is to
control and at initial stage the regular exercises and a controlled diet may not let the use of
medicine but ultimately after years and depending upon age medicine are required.
One of them know about natural treatment and he knows about the natural treatment that can
even remove the disease while normally natural treatments are not known much as per
effectiveness.
Serial 01 for individual and the grouping is done as follows:
-In Extreme Favour of natural treatment AA
-In normal favour (treat naturally along with other medication) AB
-Neutral BB
-Not in favour CC
Results are as follows:

Individual 6
1 AB01
2 AB02
3 AB03
4 AA04

AVERAGE RESULT AB00

Showing on average people are in favour but cannot go for treating diabetes solely with natural
cures and the key reason behind this is the fact that natural treatments are not that recommended
by doctors or surroundings but what came into my knowledge was of quite important in nature
and shall be discussed in conclusion part.

VII. If any, what are the reasons for not going for naturally treating the diabetes?
Following the best doctors there are exercises but haven’t heard and because others normally
don’t go for natural or even homeopathic medicines for diabetes we haven’t went for the same.
One said the homeopathic is not even effective at all then how could a natural thing can control
diabetes.
Analysis for grouping the data is as follows:
-Never heard of someone fighting naturally ND1
-Not recommended by any one ND2
-Voluntarily ND3
While the results show:

Individual 7
1 ND2
2 ND1
3 ND1
4 ND3

AVERAGE RESULT ND1.75

Showing that on average it is not so common to treat the disease naturally but the one exception
as a resulted opted for allopathy voluntarily.

VIII. Please provide here with your independent view on what should be promotable treatment
of diabetes?
Everyone follows the crowd but there should have been some other treatments in practice that
can reduce the disease because on medication and even for controlled diabetes, a single wound
can cause the body suffer much than a normal person.

CONCLUSION:
If the results are concluded based upon the meaning the individuals are 75% not in favour of
traditional ways of controlling diabetes and the other are yet use to the method used for
controlling and addressing the issues faced because of the duration they are into. However, the
theme suggested there is a need to research over the natural and ease providing ways of treating
the disease and though a single output of interview should not have been the part of conclusion
but the point can make a ground for another research that suggested the use of bottle guard
beside foot and the result was clear destruction of the disease from scratch as per the
participant’s statement suggesting the natural treatments can do miraculous cures.
