Video Tutorials
The Get Started Fast with Pro Tools series of online videos provide tutorials to help if you are new to Pro Tools. They also provide vid-
eos for the experienced user that introduce new features found in the latest versions of Pro Tools.

Pro Tools provides Folder tracks to help you organize both track layout and signal routing in your projects and sessions. Folder
tracks essentially function as containers for other tracks of any type. A Folder track can be closed to hide all of the tracks it contains,
or opened to show all contained tracks (member tracks). Thus, Folder tracks are a powerful tool for organizing tracks (by stems, in-
struments, and so on) so that you can more easily navigate complex sessions from a high level overview.
Folder tracks can hold other Folder tracks up to nine layers deep. A Folder track that contains another Folder track is a parent
Folder, and the Folder it contains is a child Folder. Folder tracks that are in the same layer are sibling Folders.
Tracks do not need to be contained by a Routing Folder track in order to route audio through it. You can bus audio from any
track to the audio input of a Routing Folder track as desired.
When opening a session with Basic Folder tracks in an earlier version of Pro Tools, all Basic Folder tracks are removed and
any member tracks revert to the top level.

Basic Folder Track Controls
Basic Folder tracks provide Solo and Mute controls that apply to all member tracks. They also provide Audio and MIDI signal in-
dicators, which light when any member track is playing back audio or MIDI respectively.

ber track clips, the border of the indicator turns either amber or red.

Solo When selected (lit), all member tracks remain unmuted (except for any member tracks that were explicitly muted separately)
while all other tracks that are not also soloed are muted.
Open/Close Folder Click to open or close the Folder track. When closed, all member tracks are hidden. When open, all member
tracks are shown. In the Edit window, member tracks are indented to show that they are contained by the Folder track. In the Mix
window, member tracks are bracketed by the Folder track’s track color.
To open or close any Folder tracks that contain the Edit cursor or that are included in the Edit selection, press Shift+F.

Routing Folder Tracks
Routing Folder tracks function just like Basic Folder tracks and can contain multiple tracks of any type (including other Folder
tracks). They also let you route and process audio in the same way as Auxiliary Input tracks. Routing Folder tracks are especially
useful for summing and stem-mixing workflows. In the Edit window, Routing Folder tracks provide Track Automation views in
addition to Overview. Any edits you make on Folder tracks Overview apply to all member tracks (see Editing Folder Tracks in
Overview).
When opening a session with Routing Folder tracks in an earlier version of Pro Tools, all Routing Folder tracks are converted to
Auxiliary Input tracks, and any member tracks revert to the top level. All track attributes are preserved, including signal routing.
3 Select the desired channel width from the Track Format selector.
4 Select the desired Track Time Base.
5 Type a descriptive Name for the Folder track.
6 Click Create.
Routing Folder tracks provide the same controls and indicators as Basic Folder tracks as well as the same controls as Auxiliary In-
put tracks. However, be sure to note the difference in Mute behavior between Basic and Routing Folder tracks.
Audio Signal Indicator Lights green when any member track plays back audio (even if the track is muted). If audio from any mem-
ber track clips, the border of the indicator turns either amber or red.
MIDI Signal Indicator Lights amber when any member track plays back MIDI.
Mute When selected (lit), the output of the Routing Folder track is muted. Unlike the Mute behavior with Basic Folder tracks, tracks
contained by the Routing Folder are not muted, so any tracks that are not routed to the input of the Routing Folder track are poten-
tially still audible.

Solo When selected (lit), all member tracks remain unmuted (except for any member tracks that were explicitly muted separately)
while all other tracks that are not also soloed are muted.
Track View Selector Lets you select Overview or Track Automation views (such as Volume or Pan).
Automation Mode Selector Lets you select the Automation mode for the Routing Folder track.
Track Freeze Button Lets you Freeze (or Unfreeze) the Routing Folder track. Only the audio output of the Routing Folder track will
be frozen (or unfrozen); audio from member tracks that are not routed through the Routing Folder track are not included.
Open/Close Automation Lanes Click to open or close Automation lanes for the Folder track. All Routing Folder track automation
applies only to audio routed through the Routing Folder track.
Track Timebase Selector Lets you select the Track Timebase (Samples or Ticks).
To open or close any Folder tracks that contain the Edit cursor or that are included in the Edit selection, press Shift+F.

Open/Close Folder track
Click the Open/Close Folder track icon on the track in either the Edit or Mix window.
Click the reveal triangle in the Tracks List.
Right-click the Folder track name in the Tracks List, or in the Edit or Mix window, and choose Open (or Close).
Keyboard Shortcuts and Key Modifiers for Opening and Closing Folder Tracks
Press Shift+F to open or close Folder tracks:
• In the Edit window, this affects only tracks in an Edit selection.
• In the Mix window, this affects only tracks within a Track selection.
• If a non-folder track that is a member of a Folder track is selected, its parent Folder is closed.
Click a Folder icon or reveal triangle in the Tracks List using the following key modifiers:
• Command-click (Mac) or Control-click (Windows) to open or close the entire Folder hierarchy.
• Option-click (Mac) or Alt-click (Windows) to open or close all Folder tracks in the same layer (sibling Folders).
• Command-Option-click (Mac) or Control-Alt-click (Windows) to open or close all Folder tracks in the same layer (sibling
Folders) and below (nested, or child Folders).
• Option-Shift-click (Mac) or Alt-Shift-click (Windows) to open or close all selected Folder tracks.
In order to avoid confusion when a large number of tracks are being shown or hidden, Pro Tools does its best to keep the tracks
that are currently on-screen visible while Folders are being opened or closed.
Folder Tracks 9
Converting an Auxiliary Input Track to a Routing Folder Track
Pro Tools lets you convert Auxiliary Input tracks to Routing Folder tracks. This is especially useful when working with projects and
sessions created in earlier versions of Pro Tools. Once you have converted an Auxiliary Input track to a Routing Folder track, you
can then manually add tracks to it.
A new Basic or Routing Folder track is created and the selected tracks are moved to the new Folder track. If you created a new Rout-
ing Folder track, a new internal bus named after the new folder track is created and assigned to its track input. If you selected the
Route Tracks to New Folder option, the outputs of any tracks you are moving to the new Routing Folder track are also assigned
to that bus.
A new bus is always created for a new Routing Folder and assigned to its input. The outputs of new member tracks are only
automatically routed to that bus if the Route Tracks to New Folder option is enabled.
Folder Tracks 10
To add one or more tracks of any type to an exiting Folder track:
1 Select one or more tracks in the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks List that you want to add to an existing Folder track.
2 Do one of the following:
• Click and drag any of the selected tracks to the Folder track in either the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks list. Orange lines
indicate the target location and level.
• Right-click the Track name of any selected track and choose Move To > <Folder track name>.
Moving a Folder track also moves all of its member tracks with it.

Duplicating Folder Tracks
When duplicating a Folder track, the Duplicate Tracks dialog provides an option to include All Member Tracks. Selecting this op-
tion duplicates the entire Folder hierarchy with all member tracks.

Edit Selections on Folders Tracks
Any Edit selection you make on a Folder track in Overview includes any track material within the range of the selection on all mem-
ber tracks. Editing in Overview on Folder tracks applies to track material on all member tracks.
When a Folder is open, Edit selections made on a Folder track in Overview are implicitly extended to all member tracks. Most edit
commands can be used without any restrictions (such as Clear, Cut, Copy, and Paste) and apply to all member tracks.
Edit Selection on Folder track in Overview (left); Clear applied to all member tracks
When a Folder is closed, Edit selections made in Overview are implicitly extended to all member tracks. However, not all edit com-
mands are available for closed Folder tracks, and some restrictions apply. Commands that are unavailable for closed Folder tracks
are grayed out in their respective menus.
Of course you can make explicit Edit selections in member tracks and apply edits only to specific member tracks.
Track-based edits (such as changing the color of a track), however, are not propagated to member tracks and only apply to the se-
lected Folder track.
The following are disallowed for implicit selections on member tracks whether the Folder track is open or closed:
• Commit (Track menu)
• Toggling bypass of inserts and sends
Folder Tracks 14
The following key modifiers can be used to make track selections in the Edit and Mix windows, as well as the Tracks List:
• Option-Control-click (Mac) or Alt-Start-click (Windows) any track in the Edit or Mix windows, or in the Tracks List to select
all tracks in the same layer (siblings).
• Command-Option-Control-click (Mac) or Control-Alt-Start-click (Windows) a track in the Tracks List to select (or deselect)
siblings in different Folders.
• Option-Control-Shift-click (Mac) or Alt-Start-Shift-click (Windows) to extend the selection to sibling tracks.
Option-Control-click (Mac) or Alt-Start-click (Windows) to select all source tracks in the same layer (sibling tracks).
Tracks imported as new tracks are inserted after the last selected track. Note that if the last selected track is an open Folder track,
selected tracks are imported into that Folder track.
