Folder Tracks

Pro Tools provides Folder tracks to help you organize both track layout and signal routing in your projects and sessions. Folder
tracks essentially function as containers for other tracks of any type. A Folder track can be closed to hide all of the tracks it contains,
or opened to show all contained tracks (member tracks). Thus, Folder tracks are a powerful tool for organizing tracks (by stems, in-
struments, and so on) so that you can more easily navigate complex sessions from a high level overview.

Folder tracks can hold other Folder tracks up to nine layers deep. A Folder track that contains another Folder track is a parent
Folder, and the Folder it contains is a child Folder. Folder tracks that are in the same layer are sibling Folders.

There are two types of Folder tracks: Basic and Routing.

Basic Folder Tracks Let you organize and manage tracks in your sessions, but without any of the special routing capabilities that
Routing Folder tracks provide. A Basic Folder track is like a container for other tracks (of any type). It is especially useful in large
sessions with many tracks. For example, if you have sixteen drum tracks in a session, you can add them to a Basic Folder track
which you can then close to free up screen space so you can view other tracks in the Edit and Mix windows without scrolling. The
solo and mute buttons on Basic Folder tracks affect all member tracks, but otherwise Basic Folder tracks do not provide any audio
or MIDI routing for member tracks.
Routing Folder Tracks Let you organize and manage tracks in your sessions, and they also provide audio routing and processing.
You can route audio from member tracks through its input, apply plug-ins, use sends, assign track automation, and output audio
much like an Auxiliary Input track.

Tracks do not need to be contained by a Routing Folder track in order to route audio through it. You can bus audio from any
track to the audio input of a Routing Folder track as desired.

Basic Folder Tracks

Basic Folder tracks can contain multiple tracks of any type (including other Folder tracks). Use Basic Folder tracks to organize
tracks in your session. In the Edit window, Basic Folder tracks display an Overview of clips on all member tracks. Any edits you
make on Folder tracks Overview apply to all member tracks (see Editing Folder Tracks in Overview).

When opening a session with Basic Folder tracks in an earlier version of Pro Tools, all Basic Folder tracks are removed and
any member tracks revert to the top level.

To create a Basic Folder track:

1 Do one of the following:

• Choose Track > New.
• Press Command+Shift+N (Mac) or Control+Shift+N (Windows).
• Right-click the Track name of any track in the Tracks List, or Edit or Mix windows, and choose New.
2 In the New Tracks dialog, select Basic Folder from the Track Type selector.

3 Type a descriptive Name for the new Folder track.

4 Click Create.

Folder Tracks 4
Basic Folder Track Controls

Basic Folder tracks provide Solo and Mute controls that apply to all member tracks. They also provide Audio and MIDI signal in-
dicators, which light when any member track is playing back audio or MIDI respectively.

while all other tracks that are not also soloed are muted.
Open/Close Folder Click to open or close the Folder track. When closed, all member tracks are hidden. When open, all member
tracks are shown. In the Edit window, member tracks are indented to show that they are contained by the Folder track. In the Mix
window, member tracks are bracketed by the Folder track’s track color.

To open or close any Folder tracks that contain the Edit cursor or that are included in the Edit selection, press Shift+F.

Folder Tracks 6
Routing Folder Tracks
Routing Folder tracks function just like Basic Folder tracks and can contain multiple tracks of any type (including other Folder
tracks). They also let you route and process audio in the same way as Auxiliary Input tracks. Routing Folder tracks are especially
useful for summing and stem-mixing workflows. In the Edit window, Routing Folder tracks provide Track Automation views in
addition to Overview. Any edits you make on Folder tracks Overview apply to all member tracks (see Editing Folder Tracks in
Overview).

When opening a session with Routing Folder tracks in an earlier version of Pro Tools, all Routing Folder tracks are converted to
Auxiliary Input tracks, and any member tracks revert to the top level. All track attributes are preserved, including signal routing.

To create a Routing Folder track:

1 Do one of the following:
• Choose Track > New.
• Press Command+Shift+N (Mac) or Control+Shift+N (Windows).
• Right-click the Track name of any track in the Tracks List, or Edit or Mix windows, and choose New.
2 In the New Tracks dialog, select Routing Folder from the Track Type selector.

3 Select the desired channel width from the Track Format selector.
4 Select the desired Track Time Base.
5 Type a descriptive Name for the Folder track.
6 Click Create.

Routing Folder Track Controls

Routing Folder tracks provide the same controls and indicators as Basic Folder tracks as well as the same controls as Auxiliary In-
put tracks. However, be sure to note the difference in Mute behavior between Basic and Routing Folder tracks.

Mute When selected (lit), the output of the Routing Folder track is muted. Unlike the Mute behavior with Basic Folder tracks, tracks
contained by the Routing Folder are not muted, so any tracks that are not routed to the input of the Routing Folder track are poten-
tially still audible.

Track Freeze Button Lets you Freeze (or Unfreeze) the Routing Folder track. Only the audio output of the Routing Folder track will
be frozen (or unfrozen); audio from member tracks that are not routed through the Routing Folder track are not included.
Open/Close Automation Lanes Click to open or close Automation lanes for the Folder track. All Routing Folder track automation
applies only to audio routed through the Routing Folder track.

Opening and Closing Folder Tracks

Folder tracks can be opened or closed to show or hide all member tracks. When opened, tracks contained by a Folder track are in-
dented in the Edit window and Tracks List, and always appear in order below the Folder track. In the Mix window, tracks contained
by a Folder track are outlined and always appear in order to the right of the Folder track. The track color bars at the top and bottom
show folder levels and membership in the Mix window.

To open (or close) a folder track, do one of the following:

 Click the Open/Close Folder track icon on the track in either the Edit or Mix window.
 Click the reveal triangle in the Tracks List.
 Right-click the Folder track name in the Tracks List, or in the Edit or Mix window, and choose Open (or Close).

Keyboard Shortcuts and Key Modifiers for Opening and Closing Folder Tracks
Press Shift+F to open or close Folder tracks:
• In the Edit window, this affects only tracks in an Edit selection.
• In the Mix window, this affects only tracks within a Track selection.
• If a non-folder track that is a member of a Folder track is selected, its parent Folder is closed.

Click a Folder icon or reveal triangle in the Tracks List using the following key modifiers:
• Command-click (Mac) or Control-click (Windows) to open or close the entire Folder hierarchy.
• Option-click (Mac) or Alt-click (Windows) to open or close all Folder tracks in the same layer (sibling Folders).
• Command-Option-click (Mac) or Control-Alt-click (Windows) to open or close all Folder tracks in the same layer (sibling
Folders) and below (nested, or child Folders).
• Option-Shift-click (Mac) or Alt-Shift-click (Windows) to open or close all selected Folder tracks.

In order to avoid confusion when a large number of tracks are being shown or hidden, Pro Tools does its best to keep the tracks
that are currently on-screen visible while Folders are being opened or closed.

Folder Tracks 9
Converting an Auxiliary Input Track to a Routing Folder Track
Pro Tools lets you convert Auxiliary Input tracks to Routing Folder tracks. This is especially useful when working with projects and
sessions created in earlier versions of Pro Tools. Once you have converted an Auxiliary Input track to a Routing Folder track, you
can then manually add tracks to it.

To convert an Auxiliary Input track to a Routing Folder track:

1 Select the Auxiliary Input track that you want to convert in the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks List.
2 Do one of the following:
• Choose Track > Convert Aux to Routing Folder.
• Right-click the name of the Auxiliary Input track in the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks List and choose Convert Aux
to Routing Folder.

Adding Tracks to and Removing Tracks from Folder Tracks

You can add tracks to and remove tracks from Folder tracks in several different ways.

To add one or more tracks of any type to a new Folder track:

1 Select one or more tracks in the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks List that you want to add to a new Folder track.
2 Do one of the following:
• Choose Track > Move To New Folder.
• Press Command+Option+Shift+N (Mac) or Control+Alt+Shift+N (Windows).
• Right-click the Track name of a selected track and choose Move To > New Folder.

Move To New Folder dialog

3 In the resulting Move To New Folder dialog, do the following:

• Select Basic Folder or Routing Folder for the Type selector.
• If you selected Routing Folder, select the Format, Time Base, and, if desired, select the Route Tracks to New Folder option.
• Name the new Folder track.
• Click Create.

A new Basic or Routing Folder track is created and the selected tracks are moved to the new Folder track. If you created a new Rout-
ing Folder track, a new internal bus named after the new folder track is created and assigned to its track input. If you selected the
Route Tracks to New Folder option, the outputs of any tracks you are moving to the new Routing Folder track are also assigned
to that bus.

A new bus is always created for a new Routing Folder and assigned to its input. The outputs of new member tracks are only
automatically routed to that bus if the Route Tracks to New Folder option is enabled.

Folder Tracks 10
To add one or more tracks of any type to an exiting Folder track:
1 Select one or more tracks in the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks List that you want to add to an existing Folder track.
2 Do one of the following:
• Click and drag any of the selected tracks to the Folder track in either the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks list. Orange lines
indicate the target location and level.
• Right-click the Track name of any selected track and choose Move To > <Folder track name>.

Moving a Folder track also moves all of its member tracks with it.

Dragging a track to add it to a Folder track (left); dragged track added to Folder track (right)

To remove one or more tracks from a Folder track:

1 If necessary, open the Folder track to view its member tracks.
2 Select one or more member tracks in the Edit or Mix window, or in the Tracks List that you want to remove from the Folder track.
3 Do one of the following:
• Click and drag any of the selected tracks out of the Folder to blank space or to another track location in either the Edit or Mix
window, or in the Tracks list. Orange lines indicate the target location of dragged tracks.
• Right-click the Track name of any selected track and choose Move To > Top Level.

Folder Tracks in the Tracks List

Folder Tracks appear in the Tracks List just like any other track type, but any member tracks are indented to indicate the folder hi-
erarchy. Folder tracks have a reveal triangle to the left of their name in the Tracks List. Click the reveal triangle to open or close
the Folder track and show or hide its member tracks.

Hiding and Showing Folder Tracks

Hiding a Folder track also hides all of its member tracks. Likewise, showing a Folder track shows all of its member tracks (except
for any that were explicitly hidden separately).

Making Folder Tracks Active and Inactive

Making a Folder track inactive also makes all of its member tracks inactive. Likewise, making a Folder track active also makes all
of its member tracks active (except for any that were explicitly made inactive separately).

Duplicating Folder Tracks
When duplicating a Folder track, the Duplicate Tracks dialog provides an option to include All Member Tracks. Selecting this op-
tion duplicates the entire Folder hierarchy with all member tracks.

Editing Folder Tracks in Overview

In the Edit window, Folder tracks provide the unique Overview track view that displays blocks representing clips on member
tracks. This is the only track view available for Basic Folder tracks. Routing Folder tracks also let you view and edit in track auto-
mation views in addition to Overview.

Folder Tracks 13
Edit Selections on Folders Tracks
Any Edit selection you make on a Folder track in Overview includes any track material within the range of the selection on all mem-
ber tracks. Editing in Overview on Folder tracks applies to track material on all member tracks.

When a Folder is open, Edit selections made on a Folder track in Overview are implicitly extended to all member tracks. Most edit
commands can be used without any restrictions (such as Clear, Cut, Copy, and Paste) and apply to all member tracks.

Edit Selection on Folder track in Overview (left); Clear applied to all member tracks

When a Folder is closed, Edit selections made in Overview are implicitly extended to all member tracks. However, not all edit com-
mands are available for closed Folder tracks, and some restrictions apply. Commands that are unavailable for closed Folder tracks
are grayed out in their respective menus.

Of course you can make explicit Edit selections in member tracks and apply edits only to specific member tracks.

Track-based edits (such as changing the color of a track), however, are not propagated to member tracks and only apply to the se-
lected Folder track.

The following are disallowed for implicit selections on member tracks whether the Folder track is open or closed:
• Commit (Track menu)
• Toggling bypass of inserts and sends

The following are restricted on closed Folder tracks:

• Select/Split Notes (Event Operations)
• Step Input (Event Operations)
• Record Enable
• Input Monitor
• Special edit commands for plug-in automation
• Real-Time Properties
• Elastic Properties

Modifier Keys for Folder Track Selections

The following key commands let you extend the Edit selection up and down through member tracks:
• Press Option+Control+Shift+P (Mac) or Alt+Start+Shift+P (Windows) to extend the Edit selection up through member
tracks.
• Press Option+Control+Shift+; (Mac) or Alt+Start+Shift+; (Windows) to extend the Edit selection down through member
tracks.

Folder Tracks 14
The following key modifiers can be used to make track selections in the Edit and Mix windows, as well as the Tracks List:
• Option-Control-click (Mac) or Alt-Start-click (Windows) any track in the Edit or Mix windows, or in the Tracks List to select
all tracks in the same layer (siblings).
• Command-Option-Control-click (Mac) or Control-Alt-Start-click (Windows) a track in the Tracks List to select (or deselect)
siblings in different Folders.
• Option-Control-Shift-click (Mac) or Alt-Start-Shift-click (Windows) to extend the selection to sibling tracks.

Editing Routing Folder Track Automation

Routing Folder tracks let you view and edit track automation, such as Volume, either in the corresponding track view or in Auto-
mation lanes. Routing Folder track automation is independent of any automation on member tracks, and editing Routing Folder
track automation does not affect the automation on member tracks.

Folder Tracks and Import Session Data

When importing Folder tracks and their member tracks using Import Session Data, the hierarchy of source tracks is maintained
where possible. The Tracks Source column indicates Folder track hierarchies using indentations. If a Folder track and its member
tracks are imported, the Folder hierarchy is maintained.

Option-Control-click (Mac) or Alt-Start-click (Windows) to select all source tracks in the same layer (sibling tracks).

Tracks imported as new tracks are inserted after the last selected track. Note that if the last selected track is an open Folder track,
selected tracks are imported into that Folder track.

Folder Tracks and Track Presets

When saving a Folder track as a Track Preset, you can either save the Folder track as an empty Folder or save it with all of its mem-
ber tracks. Folder track hierarchies are maintained when Track Presets are saved and recalled.

To include all member tracks with the Track Preset:

1 Do one of the following:

• Select the Folder track and choose Track > Save Track Preset.
• Select the Folder track and press Option+Shift+P (Mac) or Alt+Shift+P (Windows).
• Right-click the Folder track and choose Save Track Preset.
2 In the resulting Save Track Preset dialog, enable the Include All Member Tracks option in the Save Track Preset dialog.
3 Configure the rest of the dialog as desired.
4 Click OK.

Basic Folder tracks cannot be shared in online projects. Routing Folder tracks are converted to Auxiliary Input tracks when shared
and any member tracks are moved to the top layer.

Opening Sessions with Folder Tracks in Earlier Versions of Pro Tools

When opening sessions with Folder tracks in earlier versions of Pro Tools, the following occurs:
• Basic Folder tracks are lost, but all contained tracks are retained.
• Routing Folder tracks are converted to Auxiliary Input tracks, all contained tracks are retained, and all track input and output
routing is maintained.

Note that session playback sounds the same in all versions of Pro Tools.
