CELEBRATE
EVERYDAY
MOMENTS
From driving the kids to practice to tucking them
into bed, little, everyday moments can add up
to something that matters. Here’s how mom of three,
Soleil Moon Frye, turns routine activities into the
most rewarding moments of her day.
FAMILY DINNER
Every Sunday night we go out for a family dinner and make it
a fun experience. We also do theme nights like Taco Tuesday
and Pasta Thursday.
SO CRAFTY
We are big on crafting in our home. The messier the better
because it’s all about embracing those moments—even when
they are happily chaotic.
GRAB A BOOK
We love cuddling up on the bed and reading together with the kids.
DATE NIGHT
I like going to the movies, and my husband and I try to
find time for date night whenever we can. It’s nice to connect
and just be together.

PEOPLE an exclusive interview to mark her April 3 birthday
Doris Day, the original Girl Next Door, says turning 90 has been nothing
but “joyful.” The actress, who made a rare public appearance to beneit
the Doris Day Animal Foundation (ddaf.org) on April 4, tells PEOPLE that
she’s “happy and healthy.” “I don’t feel like I’m aging or anything like that,”
she adds. “I feel young!” Back in the ’50s and ’60s, her romantic comedies
such as Pillow Talk and That Touch of Mink made Day one of the biggest
box oice stars of her day. “I couldn’t wait to get to work,” she says with a
laugh. “I was just thrilled to be there. That’s the way I felt every morning.
High. We’d come home lying. And we all felt the same way.” Memories of
her favorite costars still make her smile, especially Rock Hudson. “We had
immediate chemistry,” she says. “When I irst
met him and said, ‘How do you do?’ he just
started laughing and gave me a hug. He was a
great friend. I miss him.” As for Cary Grant, she
says, “He was just so cute, but he wouldn’t like
that word.” Day left Hollywood in the early
’80s and moved to the seaside town of Carmel,
Calif. She never looked back. “I wasn’t making
a decision to walk away,” Day says. “I was just
going to a diferent place. I wanted to have
fun and do what I wanted to do.” It’s a choice
that served her well. “I’m positive,” she

FARGO
FX, April 15, 10 p.m. ET/PT |
Unless you’re submitting a paper to a conference, it sounds
DRAMA dreadful to describe Fargo as an expansion, explication and
exploration of themes found in the 1996 movie about murder in
a bleak, cold Midwest. How about if I just say it’s a gas—and that if the end
of True Detective has you at loose ends, stewing endless pots of tea, here’s a
new obsession. This 10-part miniseries borrows elements from the film—a
desperate businessman who becomes a criminal, a dogged policewoman of
plodding good sense—but drops them into a larger, wholly engrossing story
about crime syndicates and hit men. Billy Bob Thornton’s chief villain argu-
ably owes more to Javier Bardem from another Coen brothers movie, No
Country for Old Men. He’s a mysterious, striding force of evil, able to terrify
people into doing what he wants. Or he’ll just kill them. He’s also very funny,
rolling his eyes at the dumb bunnies who live out in all this snow.

AND THE
DARK SACRED
NIGHT
by Julia Glass |
Living with his unknown paternity has always
NOVEL been a struggle for Kit Noonan. But now that
he’s 40, married and the father of 9-year-old
twins, Kit finds that his unhappily stalled life demands
once and for all that he get answers. Who did his mother
pair up with all those summers ago when she was a
17-year-old cellist at an illustrious music camp in Ver-
mont? At his wife’s urging, Kit grudgingly embarks on a
journey of self-discovery, following the well-meaning
advice of his stepfather and others and eventually throw-
ing open the locked closet of his father’s identity. Deftly
weaving together narrative flashbacks from rural Ver-
mont in the 1920s and ’60s with contemporary threads
set in New Jersey, Cape Cod and New York City, Glass’s
fifth novel warns us that “promises to keep secrets, those
are the trickiest ones—especially when they’re secrets
you don’t even know you’ve been keeping.” And the Dark
Sacred Night is a tender, insightful and winning explora-
tion of the modern family and the infinite num-
ber of shapes it can take.

BIOGRAPHY Taraborrelli’s riveting new book chronicles the epic wealth, dys-
function and scandals of the infamous Hilton clan. Born in 1887,
Conrad Hilton redefined the luxury hotel industry, but running an interna-
tional business proved easier than running a family. Having lived through the
Depression, he didn’t believe being related to him should guarantee a carefree
life. Instead he insisted on a work ethic and philanthropy, making kids Nicky,
Barron, Eric and Francesca earn everything they had. The book includes fas-
cinating stories of Nicky’s drug and alcohol dependence and his brief, tempes-
tuous marriage to Elizabeth Taylor; scenes from Conrad’s stormy union with
Zsa Zsa Gabor; and enough Paris Hilton tidbits to show why she’s her enter-
prising great-granddad’s true successor. Hang out the Do Not Disturb sign for
this addictive tale. —REVIEWED BY CAROLINE LEAVITT

That charisma made Rooney a natural
movie star. “He took over every scene he
was in,” says TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, even
if that scene included Spencer Tracy in
Boys Town or Judy Garland in their many
musicals, including 1939’s Babes in Arms,
for which Rooney got his irst of four Oscar
nominations. He could also hold his own
opposite horses (National Velvet, The
Black Stallion), Disney cartoons (Pete’s
Dragon) and Ben Stiller (Night at the
Museum, a sequel for which the tireless
actor had just inished shooting).
Born in Brooklyn to two vaudevillians,

was a 19-year-old newcomer when they

“She broke my heart,” Rooney told
People in 1999. “I couldn’t get settled with
my love life.” There were seven more trips
to the altar (the last, to Jan Chamberlin,
endured 35 years, though the couple were
separated at the time of his death) and
nine children.
Rooney also battled problems with alco-
hol and faced career slumps. In his 90s he
testiied before Congress that he was the
victim of elder abuse by a family member,
though no charges were iled. And profes-
sionally he endured, never losing his char-
acteristic pluck. On March 30 he was

A young vaudeville veteran like Rooney, Frances Gumm was
transformed by MGM into Judy Garland. They attended the studio
school and were paired in a string of highly successful musicals,

Rooney told PEOPLE. “She was like my sister.” His happiest memory
