apologized to the family of Reeva
Steenkamp, 29, the girlfriend he is
accused of shooting in his home on
Valentine’s Day 2013. “I can’t imagine
the pain and emptiness and sorrow that
I’ve caused,” he testified, at times so
quietly the judge had to ask him to
speak up. “I was simply trying to protect
Reeva. I can promise you that when she
went to bed that night, she felt loved.”
The Olympic sprinter, portrayed by
prosecutors as a jealous boyfriend
obsessed with guns, has pleaded not
guilty. He faces a minimum of 25 years
in prison if convicted of premeditated
murder in the death of Steenkamp.

When Kirstie Alley recently tried to wriggle into her favorite LBD, the actress
knew something was up—she just didn’t think it was her weight. “It looked great when
I wore it around Christmas, but I was like, ‘Who took this to the dry cleaner and shrunk
it?’” says Alley, 63. But the culprit wasn’t the cleaner. For the past six months, “I wasn’t
monitoring myself as much as I should,” she admits. “When I get thin and people tell
me I look amazing, I think, ‘So what if I eat this or that?’ It’s fine for about three months,
and then it starts to shift.” Before her waistline got out of hand, Alley decided to team
up (again!) with Jenny Craig, which helped her shed 75 lbs. from 2004-07. Her new
goal? Drop the 30 lbs. she gained while she was in
“holiday mode,” she says. “My weakness was
chicken and noodles. I could eat huge mixing
bowls of that.” Along with using her Organic
Liaison supplements, the Dancing with
the Stars alum now goes on hour-long
walks. In the end “I would prefer every-
one to say, ‘Oh, she looks pretty’
instead of ‘Oh, look at her ass!’”

might not have found it until much
further down the road,” she says. “But
I didn’t take no for an answer.”
At first she grappled with the choice of
a double mastectomy or a less radical
second lumpectomy and radiation. “That
would have been simpler. I would be able
to pick up my kids,” says Harris, who is
mom to Hillary, 3, and Josselyn, 6, and
has not yet shared the news with her girls.
But she decided instead to have the
double mastectomy: “Once I made this
decision, I felt so much calmer.” With her
surgery scheduled for the end of April, at
which point doctors can classify the
cancer’s stage, “it feels daunting and
overwhelming,” she says. “But getting
to the other side will feel great.”

Doris Day, the original Girl Next Door, says turning 90 has been nothing
but “joyful.” The actress, who made a rare public appearance to beneit
the Doris Day Animal Foundation (ddaf.org) on April 4, tells PEOPLE that
she’s “happy and healthy.” “I don’t feel like I’m aging or anything like that,”
she adds. “I feel young!” Back in the ’50s and ’60s, her romantic comedies
such as Pillow Talk and That Touch of Mink made Day one of the biggest
box oice stars of her day. “I couldn’t wait to get to work,” she says with a
laugh. “I was just thrilled to be there. That’s the way I felt every morning.

settlement administration expenses; (3) pay attorneys’ fees
as ordered by the Court of up to 25% of the settlement fund
(or $5.75 million), plus up to $650,000 in expenses; and (4)
pay a total incentive award of up to $32,500 to the Class
Representatives.
What can I get?
Class Members filing a claim for replacement of toilet
connectors can get up to $20. Class Members filing a
claim for property damages can recover up to 25% of their
documented repair costs.
Your Options
If you do nothing, you will remain in the settlement and
your rights will be affected. If you do not want to be
included, you must exclude yourself by June 29, 2014.

ably owes more to Javier Bardem from another Coen brothers movie, No
Country for Old Men. He’s a mysterious, striding force of evil, able to terrify
people into doing what he wants. Or he’ll just kill them. He’s also very funny,

For Kate the trip marks only her third
international tour—and her first visit to
Australia and New Zealand. The tour
also marks her biggest royal duty to date,
as she has spent much of the past nine
months on a maternity leave of sorts:

overseeing renovations at the family’s
homes in London and Norfolk, as well as
nesting at the Bucklebury home of her
parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.
“It’s something she’s always wanted to
do,” says William’s private secretary,
Miguel Head. “The breadth of things
they’re going to be seeing and the people
they’re going to be meeting makes her
very enthusiastic. [William] is in no
doubt that his wife will fall in love with
New Zealand and Australia every bit

 as much as he did some years ago.”
William himself was almost exactly
his son’s age when he made his irst trip
to the region 31 years earlier with his
own parents, Prince Charles and Prin-
cess Diana. Showing off his newly
learned crawling skills, “William
Wombat”—a family nickname he
earned after the trip—charmed fans
even as his mother, then 21, kept her
stress hidden behind the scenes. “I
went to my lady-in-waiting, cried my
eyes out and said, ‘Anne, I’ve got to go
home. I can’t cope with this,’ ” Diana
later told biographer Andrew Morton.
“William doesn’t want this trip to be a
replica of when he went with his par-
ents 31 years ago,” says Majesty maga-
zine editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward. “He
wants it to be diferent and matching
how he and Kate do things.” Most nota-
bly, “seeing the interaction between
William and Kate is totally diferent”
from his parents, says the friend of the
couple. “It’s not the future king and
wife who will do as she’s told, but a hus-
band and wife in the modern world.”
Which means making a concerted
efort to carve out time for just the two
of them, including a recent weeklong
getaway to the Maldives during which
they left George with the Middletons.
On April 22 the couple will spend the
night in a luxury tent at the exclusive
$1,100-per-person Longtitude 131
resort at Australia’s Uluru-Kata Tjuta
National Park—otherwise known as
Ayers Rock—with George in Borrallo’s
care in Canberra. And on April 11 they

could think was: What a

to Prince William, to the
monarchy and to Britain.
As PEOPLE’s royal
correspondent since
1999, I’ve covered
William and Kate’s eight-
year courtship, their
engagement, the royal
wedding and, of course,
the July 22, 2013, birth of
Prince George Alexander
Louis of Cambridge.
I’ve been part of the
international press pack
that has accompanied
the couple on their royal
tours, irst of Canada and
Los Angeles in 2011 and
of Malaysia, Singapore
and the Solomon Islands
in 2012. On that irst trip,
Kate told me she had
been “slightly nervous”
before a dragon-boat
race event (famously
competitive, she battled
it out with her husband,
but the Prince prevailed,
declaring, “No chivalry
[in sport]”).
This time Kate showed
no sign of nerves. This
was a princess and
mother fully in command
of both roles (and her
balance, toting a baby
down a roll-away staircase
in Emmy heels). Even as
her red Catherine Walker
coat evoked memories of
Princess Diana three
decades ago, I was struck
by how much had
changed. Back in 1983,
when Di and Prince
Charles brought a
9-month-old Prince
William Down Under, it
was William’s nanny
Barbara Barnes carrying
her tiny charge of the
plane. For a while there
were murmurings Kate
wouldn’t hire a full-time
nanny, relying as heavily
as she does on the ace
babysitting services of
her mom, Carole
Middleton. She did in the
end concede to the
demands of royal life,
bringing on Jessie Webb
briely and then in March
hiring Norland College-
trained Maria Borrallo.
With royalty no choices
are accidental. Kate and
William want to tell the
world on this tour, as they
have done so many times
before: We are in charge.
For William, who
returned to New Zealand a
few times as a bachelor
prince, having Kate there
“as an equal” by his side,
one of their friends told
me, has enabled him to
embark on a life of royal
duty eased by the joy of a
happy family life. It’s no
surprise, then, that the
baby these two have
brought into the world—
who faced hundreds of
cameras outside St. Mary’s
Hospital in London a day
after he was born—is a
secure and inquisitive
infant. At parties with
Kate, he has no trouble
being taken around the
room; he reaches out
to guests’ wine glasses
or to grab your inger in
a baby handshake.
Still, it has to be all a
bit daunting, traveling
halfway around the world
while you’re teething.
At one point, before they
introduced their son to
dignitaries and Maori
leaders at Wellington’s
Government House,
William reached out and
stroked his baby’s chubby
legs. Even a little prince
needs a bit of reassurance
now and then.

competitive, and we expect this to be
very enjoyable,” says Head with a wink.
But it’s their active, soon-to-be tod-
dler who will most keep them on their
toes. With two new teeth and having
just learned to crawl, “he will be at a
very inquisitive age,” says Sarah Dixon,
a maternity nurse who has worked with
friends of the royal couple. “He will
enjoy being out and exploring new
sights and sounds.” Having just
recently survived the sleepless new-
born crying stage, “I think the sleep
routine is going to be a massive issue for
them” given the change in surround-
ings and time difference, says Dixon.
And there are other practical consider-
ations. “Baby food preparation is
another thing to consider at this age,”
she says. “They will liaise closely with
the chefs there because it’s important

ill Duggar thought March 29
would be just a normal day.
She and boyfriend Derick
Dillard were taking a casual
Saturday stroll into the center
of Bentonville, Ark., enjoying the sun-
shine and spring breeze after sharing
enchiladas at lunch. Jill, 22, didn’t think
twice when their two chaperones—her
sisters Jana, 24, and Joy, 16, accompa-
nying the couple due to her family’s
conservative religious philosophy (see
sidebar)—started lagging behind or
when a stranger on a park bench asked
if he could sing the young couple a love
song. “By the second verse,” Jill says, “I
knew the song was about Derick and
me.” Musicians came out from behind
the bushes and a fountain to join in, and
when Derick, 25, dropped to one knee,
ofering up the .63-carat diamond and
white-gold ring he’d custom-designed,
everything became clear. “I shared how
much I loved her, how I couldn’t imag-
ine life without her, and I asked her,
‘Will you marry me?’ ” Derick reveals.
Jill’s response: “I said, ‘Yes! Totally!’ ”
Now that the couple are betrothed, it
means they get to take another big step
as well, one most couples get out of the
way long before anyone busts out a ring.
They can inally—wait for it—hold hands.
Call it romance, Duggar-style. As Jill
and her younger sister Jessa, 21, both
began courting in the last year, they’ve
adhered to a set of rules that most young
couples would consider positively anti-
quated. In an age of hookups and sext-
ing, these couples take it slow, only see
each other with supervision, and abso-
lutely no funny business is allowed.
“Dating with a purposeful mind-set is
really such a contrast from what we are
used to seeing in our world,” explains
their mother, Michelle, 47, who, along
with her husband, Jim Bob, 48, and
their 19 children, stars in TLC’s hit real-
ity show 19 Kids & Counting. “Emotions
get heated the closer you get. You’re like
two magnets being pulled together,”
she says. “You need boundaries.”
Those boundaries are ones that both
Duggar girls currently in relationships
are embracing. For Jill and Derick, an
accountant, these old-fashioned con-
cepts are just ways to practice self-

spouses to master. “We decided to wait
to hold hands until we were engaged
and to have our irst kiss on our wed-
ding day,” Jill explains. “We want to
save the physical side of our relation-
ship for our wedding day and not go
further than we should. If you are kiss-
ing, it gets more intimate.” During their
courtship, they believe, having a strict
boundary is only a beneit. “Obviously,
you can kiss and not have sex,” Jill says.
“It’s about setting a higher standard so
you don’t struggle [with temptation].”
Her younger sister Jessa, 21, and boy-
friend Ben Seewald, 18, made similar
promises. “It’s hard sometimes,” admits
Jessa. “I won’t say there isn’t a desire to
kiss my man.” And though she says
they’ve taken their parents’ advice on
courting, Jessa insists these rules are
her own: “It’s up to us to decide what we
will and won’t do. We’re not going to fol-
low the rules if it’s not us making them.”
The girls’ brother and oldest Duggar
Joshua, 26, followed the same tenets
when courting his now-wife, Anna, 25.
Of course it doesn’t appear as though
there are a lot of rule breakers growing
up in the Duggar household. Devout
Christians who follow a lifestyle that
includes daily prayer, homeschooling
and Bible study, Jim Bob and Michelle
have held tightly to their belief that the
number of children they have is God’s
choice, not their own—a conviction that
has brought them under ire from some
viewers and medical professionals after
their 19th child, Josie, now 4, was born
dangerously prematurely in 2009 and
their 20th child was miscarried in 2011.
Despite any heartbreak they’ve faced as
a family, both say they ind comfort in
the idea that God’s will has been done.
(And, Michelle adds, they are thankful
that Josie had no developmental issues
as a result of being born prematurely.)
“We gave this area of our life over to
God,” Jim Bob says. “We had planned
on having about three kids. Jill is our
fourth child and wouldn’t even be here
if we hadn’t had a change of heart.”
Protecting your heart—and the per-
son’s with whom you are in a relation-
ship—is the foundation of the courtship
process, explains Jessa. She and her
 boyfriend Ben, the oldest of seven kids
born to Michael, 39, an auto-glass-
replacement subcontractor and Guinn,
39, a stay-at-home mom, began court-
ing before Jill and Derick did. Yet they
are happy to move at their own pace.
“We are young and in love and won’t
rush into anything,” says Jessa. Agrees
Ben, an insurance salesman and full-
time business-management student:
“We have our own relationship.” Of their
reticence to experience the physical, he
says, “Holding hands is great; I’m not
condemning anyone for doing that. But
we want something to look forward to.”
Now, as the family readies for Jill and
Derick’s wedding (they plan to walk
down the aisle in the next few months),
the bride, for one, is conident she and
her new fiancé won’t disagree about
much—probably because she already
has it in writing. Before she even began
courting him, Jill wrote down a three-
page list of hard-hitting questions
including queries about his faith, how

many kids he wanted, if he drank or

smoked and much more. “It was an
interrogation,” Jill admits of their irst
talk, a Skype conversation that lasted
ive hours. With a laugh and a shrug, she
adds, “I didn’t want to not have the guts
to ask the tough questions.”
Her up-front approach was wel-
comed by Derick, who grew up in
nearby Rogers, Ark., the oldest of
(only!) two kids born to Cathy, now 57,
a retail consultant, and Rick, a police
oicer who died in 2008. “I admired the
Duggars even before the show,” Derick
says. “And Jill and I got to know each
other without the physical part of it.”
While Derick attended public school
and graduated from Oklahoma State
University (even serving as the school’s
mascot Pistol Pete), his own beliefs
were in line with the Duggars’; he went

with his church youth group one Christ-

For Cathy, her son’s relationship (and
subsequent introduction into reality
TV) is all part of what he’s meant to do.
“He is where God wants him to be,” she
says. And if the couple decide to have a
Duggar-size family? “I would be
delighted,” Cathy says. “I can’t wait.”
She might not have to wait long. “We

After a long night of critiquing celebrity cha-chas on Dancing with
A the Stars, Carrie Ann Inaba can’t wait to get back to her “tradi-
tional eclectic” Valley Village, Calif., home. “On Dancing some-
times people get very heated, and as a judge, if they don’t agree
with you, they come at you. It’s really important to come home
to a place that feels very warm and loving,” says the 46-year-old former dancer
and choreographer. The vibe of  the space is enhanced by Inaba’s seven pets: rescue
dogs Peanut, a pug-Chihuahua mix, Lola and Buddy, and four cats, Mimi, Blizzard,
Squeaker, who is deaf, and another special-needs cat, Taz. “It’s craziness when I
get home from the show, because my pets haven’t seen me all day, so the irst
thing I do is play with them. We run around, we go outside, we play fetch, and

moved in a year and a half ago. “It took
me four years to ind it, and I knew it was
my house before I even stepped inside,”
she says. “I found it after my breakup
with my ex-fiancé. The feeling of this
house made me think it would be the
perfect place to start the next chapter.”
Part of the draw was all the space for
entertaining. “I had just started my ani-
mal foundation, the CAI Animal Proj-
ect—which helps raise rescue funds—
and I knew I wanted to have people
come over,” she says. “You have to feel
really good about where you live to
invite people into it, and so what’s nice
about this home is I feel like I get to
share everything I’ve worked hard for
with my friends in a comfortable way. I
want people to plop down and bust out
a glass of wine and enjoy themselves.”
Inaba’s zeal for entertaining comes
after one memorable hosting misire—
with her Dancing co-judges Len Good-
man and Bruno Tonioli—at her
previous home. “The first time I had
them over, my stove broke, the air con-
ditioner broke, and my coffee maker
broke,” she recalls. “Bruno was going to
make this incredible meal, but nothing
worked, so we ended up playing Wii all
night and laughed until the morning.”
Inaba decorated her new house her-
self almost entirely with pieces she
found online. She sought items that
were elegant, sensual and nature-
inspired. “Everything must be touch-
able and livable. I mix a lot of low-end
stuf with high-end stuf, and I’m always
coming up with new ideas about how I
want to feel in my home. I’m constantly
redecorating,” she says.
She also makes sure to keep her dogs
and cats in mind while sprucing things
up—her living room features removable
carpet tiles, one of her favorite finds,
and slipcovers on her couches. Inaba
also allows her pets free reign. “I know
it’s weird because I’m the rule queen on
Dancing with the Stars,” she says. “But
that’s because it’s a competition. Here
at home I don’t believe there are any
rules. It’s all about what you want.”

or many years, Mickey Rooney
had a favorite gag. “My marriage
license reads, ‘To whom it may
concern,’ ” he quipped to the
L.A. Times in 1981. He was just
5'2" and chipmunk-cheeked, but Rooney—
who died April 6 at age 93 in his North Hol-
lywood home—was also a Casanova. The
diminutive star rose to fame in the 1930s
playing characters like squeaky-clean teen
Andy Hardy, but his eight marriages were
nearly as storied as his career. “Look, he
could be extraordinarily charming,”
explains his Broadway costar Ann Jillian.
That charisma made Rooney a natural
movie star. “He took over every scene he
was in,” says TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, even
if that scene included Spencer Tracy in
Boys Town or Judy Garland in their many
musicals, including 1939’s Babes in Arms,
for which Rooney got his irst of four Oscar
nominations. He could also hold his own
opposite horses (National Velvet, The
Black Stallion), Disney cartoons (Pete’s
Dragon) and Ben Stiller (Night at the
Museum, a sequel for which the tireless
actor had just inished shooting).
Born in Brooklyn to two vaudevillians,
Joseph Yule Jr. made his showbiz debut at
17 months. MGM signed him at age 14, and
he was soon a box oice king—in 1939 his

was a 19-year-old newcomer when they
wed in 1942; they split after 16 months.
“She broke my heart,” Rooney told
People in 1999. “I couldn’t get settled with
my love life.” There were seven more trips
to the altar (the last, to Jan Chamberlin,
endured 35 years, though the couple were
separated at the time of his death) and
nine children.
Rooney also battled problems with alco-
hol and faced career slumps. In his 90s he
testiied before Congress that he was the
victim of elder abuse by a family member,
though no charges were iled. And profes-
sionally he endured, never losing his char-
acteristic pluck. On March 30 he was
enjoying a favorite pastime—playing the
ponies at Santa Anita—and “fans were
coming up to him, asking for autographs,”
says pal Dick Van Patten. “Mickey loved
that.” After nine decades he could still
command an audience.

was just 19 when she wed MGM’s 21-year-old star. When
angry, Gardner, who stood 6 in. taller than Rooney,
would call him “midget.” Later she would say, “He went
through the ladies like a hot knife through fudge.”

A young vaudeville veteran like Rooney, Frances Gumm was
transformed by MGM into Judy Garland. They attended the studio
school and were paired in a string of highly successful musicals,
including Babes in Arms (above). “We were never sweethearts,”
Rooney told PEOPLE. “She was like my sister.” His happiest memory
of her? “Every day was happy with Judy.”

Rooney’s marriage to Ava Gardner had already come
and gone by the time he costarred with Taylor in National
Velvet (together in a publicity shot, below), the movie
that would make her a star at age 12. Though both would
become notorious for their many mates, their friendship
would be close, lifelong and by all accounts platonic.
Her 2011 death clearly shook Rooney, who called her
passing “a great personal loss.”

dle-class Brooklyn girl at heart.”
But to really know Anne Hatha-
way is to understand that at her core, she is
a theater geek of the highest order. Relect-
ing on her current approach to life, she pulls
from legendary Broadway composer Ste-
phen Sondheim. “He has this great line in
Into the Woods: ‘Must it all be either less or
more/ Either plain or grand?/ Is it always
or ?/ Is it never and ?’ ” she says, revealing just
a hint of her trained soprano. “I kind of
approach my life from a place of and.”
So in the year since scoring an Oscar for
her wrenching turn as Fantine in Les Misér­
ables, Hathaway, 31, has focused on being an
actress and a wife and a woman in desperate

the 2011 hit, “Anne liked it better because
this time she was able to play a mother,” says
Saldanha. “She was so relaxed.” Not least
because the voice role offered a low-key
work environment. “I could just show up in
my ugly jeans. Or as I like to call them, my
‘doin’ pants,’ ” says Hathaway. “You know
you have those pants that look so terrible,
but you just get stuf done in them?”
At the top of Hathaway’s to-do list is time
with Shulman, whom she wed in September
2012. “I’m a homebody,” she says. As for her
career, does she ponder the possibility of
motherhood when weighing her roles? “No,
not yet,” she says. “I haven’t started thinking
about that.” She’s poised to play the lead
in a Judy Garland biopic, and this fall she
reteams with her Dark Knight Rises
director Christopher Nolan for the sci-
i epic Interstellar. But when she’s not
on-set, the unabashed Broadway
baby is often belting it out. “I sing
everywhere,” she says. “I have a
very patient husband. He says
he doesn’t mind. But we’ve
only been married a year
and a half!”
