1. Write a brief summary of each “modern masters” chapter in the book.

VICENT VAN GOHG


Vicent Van Gohg. He was born on 30th MArch in 1853 in Goroot-Zundert, a village in the south
of the Netherlands. He worked as an art dealer before he started trying to sell his paintings.
He fell in love with a engaged woman and became depressed, after that he was fired. When he
returned home he wnated to became a pastor, but he failed the final exam. HE decided that
por coal miners reeded hope, so he teached the Word of God to them. To yunderstand what
that people felt he started iving like them, this inspired him and he began to draw. At first he
copied other artiste that painted the por and the hungry, and then he started to draw original
paintings. He wnated tro capture the feelimgs ot the peolpe. He used dark colors and painted
the peasants with san anf tired expressions.

He returned come but it was a mistake. Vicent fell in love again, and when he was rejected he
moved again. He moved to the The hauge and argued with his cousin and his father. His
brother told him to move to Pairs with him and he did it.There he learnt about impressionism
from a lot ot famous artists. Paris opened his eyes to the beauty of the everyday world and he
didn´t paint the hungry anymore. Instead he painted flowers, streets scenes and landscapes.

He was Friends with Paul Gaugin and they both exhibited at the Café du Tambourin., but
Vicnet didn’t sell a single one. His borther Theo supported him, but they argued a lot. Vinvent
moved to Arles beacouse he needed a quiet place. Some time later Gaugin and Vicent moved
together and they painted side by side. They argued a lot and Gaugin left.

At the age of 36 he asked to be atimted in the local mental asylum, he kept creating in the
asylum. A doctor named Dr Gachet helped him a lot, and he found peace of mind.

He die don 27th July, 1890.

PABLO PICASSO
Pablo picasso was born on 25th october, 1881 in Málaga. His father tought him to draw, and
he was very strict. Pablo was a master at the age of 13. In 1895 his sister died and he was
traumatised. That year he entered in the Academy of Fine Arts. He became friends with other
artist in a cafe called Els Quatre Gats and exhibted there. He didn't get good reviews and his
parents did't understand that he wanted to try new things.

Pablo moved to paris in 1904 and opened a studio. He wasn't satisfaied with tradicional
techniques ofnshowing thinga realistically.

When his friend Carlos Casagemas died, he was traumatised, again. This was the start of
Picasso's Blue Period.

When Picasso met Fernande Oliver he fell in love. This was the start of Picasso' s Rose Period
(1904-1906). Some peolpe call it Circus period bc he painted acrobats, clowns and other circus
peolpe.
After this Picasso experimented with shapes, this new style was calles cubism. He painted
things that did'n look real. He said:" I paint objects as I think them, no as I see them". He was
very criticed.

When the Spanish Civil War started and in 1937 the town of Guernica was bombed he was
furious and he painted a gigantic paintkng called Guernica. The money he raised was used to
support troops to fight against the Nacionalist.

One of his most famous paintings is Weeping Woman. Is is dramatic, and it was based on a
portrait of Dora Maar.

In the 1950s he was a celebrity and he moved various times.

He married twice and he frequently painted pictures of his mistress. He had 4 children. The
two youngwst ones were from his mistress.

During the last 5 years of his life he painted more than ever.

He died in 1973 and he created almost 2000 drawings, over 1000 sculptures and 2880
ceramics. 12000 drawings and several tapestries and rugs.

ANDY WARHOL
Andy Warhol (his original name was Andrew Warhola) was born in 1928 in Pennsylvania. His
family was very poor. He had a rare disease that made him stay at home, his mother sugested
him drawings competitions and he loved drawing. But he only showed his art to his family.
When Andy was 13 his father died. At 16 Andy went to Carnirgie Institute of Technology to
study drawing.

College wasn' t easy and they were in debt. He worked selling apples and tomatoes, and then
he got a job creating window displays.

At 21 he sold a drawing to Glamour magazine and it was succesfull. He painted for magazines
and ilustrated adverts books and record covers.

He liked drawing the same picture again and again changing it just a little bit.

He was becoming succesful and he won a lot of awards.

In 1952 he exibhited for the first time, but he didn't sell anything.

In the 1960s Pop Art was created. He painted 32 soup cans. Wharhol showed the paintings at
the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and the public was shocked. He became famous and very
controversial. Some people said thet Warhol was ridiculing the art world.

Then he discovered the silk-screen process and made a lot of new art..

He painted a lot of famous people like Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley.

In the mid-1960s he opened a studio in New York named “Factory”. He made a lot of parties,
and the peolpe who were in them became konow as the Warhol Superstas.
He made a lot of films that he directed using the Warhol Superstars as actors.

Warhol made films of people doing everyday things, then he slowed down the film to show
how peculiar they were. His most famous film was Chelsea Girlas.

He produced a group called The Velvet Underground.

In one of the parties he met Valerie Solanas, she showed him a script that he lost, so she
demandad money in compensation. Wharhol didn’t wnat to pay. Solana was disturbing him so
he refused to talk to her, in 1868 Valerie shot Andy. She alomst killed him, but he recovered.

After this his view of life changed. He started a magazine and then published a book.

He died in 1887.

2. What have you learnt bt Reading the book?

I have learnt a lot about the personal lives of the artists, and a lot too about the art of artists
like Andy Wharhol. I think it is very interesting and usefull.

3. Did you like it? Why/Why not? Justify youe answer.

I liked it, I think it is very interesting and entreteined to read, and I learnt a lot.
