CHARACTERISTICS,

STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES,
OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

1
FOREWORD
As human beings we always tend to be curious and ask questions on things that are
happening. Hence, when we apply the scientific approach in satisfying our curiosity and
intuition, then, we are doing research!

Daily living challenges us to explore, investigate, invent, solve problems or simply

surf the net. Conducting simple researches means making study and experiment an ordinary
practice which leads to the acquisition of new knowledge. Thus, constant experience on
solving problems through scientific processes drives us to learning.

This learning material gives you an essential knowledge and skills in determining the
characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses of quantitative research.

This SLK also aims of enriching your skill in determining whether it is appropriate to
use the quantitative approach in situations as well as to categorize research titles according to
the kinds of quantitative research.

OBJECTIVE

To describe the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative research.

2

What is Quantitative Research?

Quantitative research is a systematic investigation of observable natural phenomena where the

researcher gathers quantitative or numerical data and subjects them to statistical methods.

Expressions like numerical forms, objective thinking, statistical methods, and measurement signal the
existence of quantitative research.

Numerical is a descriptive word pertaining to or denoting a number or symbol to express how many,
how much, or what rank things are or have in this world.
Ex. How much, How many, What is,
etc.

Strengths of Quantitative Research

It can be replicated or repeated in other contexts.

It provides findings that are generizable to a large population.

It can establish causality more conclusively.

It can make predictions based on numerical data.

Data analysis using statistical software is faster.

Data-gathering techniques are less demanding.

It has a low degree of subjectivity.

Its validity and realiability can be measured.

In the next activity, show your strength of identifying the characteristics, strengths and
weaknesses of quantitative research by choosing in each item the letter that corresponds
to the correct answer. Use your activity notebook for your answer.
1. Which of the following BEST defines quantitative research?
A. It is an exploration associated with libraries, books and journals.
B. It is a systematic process obtaining numerical information about the world.
C. It is an activity concerned with finding new truth in education.
D. It is an activity of producing or proving a theory.
2. Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of quantitative research?
A. Data are gathered before proposing a conclusion or solution to a problem
B. Figures, tables or graphs showcase summarized data collection in order to show
trends, relationship or differences among variables
C. Method can be repeated to verify findings in another setting, thus, strengthen and
reinforcing validity of findings eliminating the possibility of spurious conclusions

5
D. It seeks to gather a more comprehensive understanding of activities related to human
behavior and the attributes that rule such behavior
3. Which of the following describes the characteristics of research where data are in a form of
statistics?
