CHERISHED MOMENTS Brenda Harris @ Brenda Harris started painting as a hobby at the age of thirty-one. A few years later, encouraged by her family ind friends, she entered her frst juried art show. Her style and ability to cap ture one’ imagination proved to be a winning combination; she was awarded high honors in the show: She continued tw exhibit in shows throughout the country and continued to win num- erous awards. However, it was not until she started sharing her tech- niques with others that her true talent emerged—teaching, Armed with boundless energy, unlimited patience an painting, she began teaching work- shops for a small group of friends in Jacksonville, Florida. From these small but enthusiastic workshops has a love for come an instructor of national televi- sion acclaim, Since 1987 Brenda has taught thousands of students via public tele- vision nationwide. In conjunction with each of her many television series, Brenda has authored corresponding instruction books. Brenda has written ‘more than a dozen instructional books and filmed more than 180 educational television shows. She believes that nothing replaces the one-on-o1 sonal touch. In some projects you will also use design pro~ rectors and mats. This page gives you a reference for these three techniques, Transferring a Pattern Enlarge the pattern according to the per- ge onit Lay the canvas on a flat, sturdy snd tape the pattem firmly in place. insert piece of white or black transfer paper down between the pattern and savas, Tace the lines with a stylus or a bll- pen that no longer writes. Remove any visible transfer lines witha kneaded eraser or clean moist sponge after = painting has dred, Using an Adhesive Design Protector ‘When you paint the background firs, you'll often need to proreet an area of your painting. Trace the image you need to protect onto a piece of contact paper or label paper; use the same technique as transfering 2 pattem. Cut cou the image, remove the backing, align the design protector over the traced image and pressit onto the dry canvas. Paine careflly around the protector. Whenever possible, start with the brush on the protector and stroke away from it Stroking toward the design protector wil often force paint under it. When you are ready to paint the image under the protector, careflly peel the protector off the canvas. French Matting (A) Place the canvas on a flat surfuee, then place the mat template (precut photograph matting that can be purchased from any erat or framing store) over it. Hold the mat tem- plate securely and trace the inside edges With a waterproof permanent marker oF technical pen. 2) Remove the template and letthe nk dry Cover the border with masking or shipping tape, overlapping the tape about ‘inch (12mm) inside the ink lines on all four Sides. Tchelps to think of such paintings as a lot of small parts, much like a puzzle, instead of an intricate painting or a person. When you deal with one sec tion at a time and then connect the sections, you can accomplish any mission you attempt at your easel. ‘You will easily master this composition that way: Although you will lear the basics of creating hair, skin and clothing folds, you don't have to stay true to the form you see. For example, the eyes are only a suggestion of how eyes should look. ‘The painting is designed to be not a specific portrait but a portrayal of the ‘concept that all children are little angels. Add accents of the “Teal, Medium Turquoise and Medium Violet-Gray mistures Scoking upward from the bottom. With the Medium Violet- Gray misture, create a shadowy area around the angel. Blend sith vertical stokes using a dean, dry 2-inch (31mm) bristle fat. Letdry. Create the Stars ‘Using the Off-White mixture and the inch (12mm) multi- texture brush, add crosses to indicate stars in the pink area. “Tum the brush vertically for the longer, vertical stroke and horizontally for the shorter cross stroke. For the stars in the darker areas of the sky, add 2 touch of the Medium Blue mix- ture to the Off-White mixture. Bloc the wee stars lightly with your finger to subdue them if needed. w 2 Stipple the Ground Using the ? Background Colors h, Begin with the ‘Teal mixture along the top edge, then add the Light Blue mixture and end with the Medium Violet-Gray ‘mixture at the bottom and underneath the angel. Stipple } accents of Whiteblend and of the Pink, Pale Yellow and ‘Medium Tarquoise mixtures randomly in the wet paint Let dry. Iftouch-ups are needed in the background, moisten it with a fifty-fifty mix of water and Clearblend; then add and blend the appropriate colors. Let dry and remove the design protector. ey ck and Ear Paint the Face, N ng at the forehead and moving down to the chin, apply the Flesh mixture along the front ofthe face with the “inch (10mm) sable/syntheric angle. Fill in the side ofthe forehead and face with the Peach mixture. Place 2 dab of the Blush mixture on the cheekbone and blend. While this is wee, apply \ and blend a touch of the Flesh Shadow mixture under- | neath the chin. While the colors are wet, blend them with | the feathery tips of the “inch (12mm) multitesture brush ‘ TERESA Paint the Neck and Ear Paint the back of the neck with the Flesh Shadow mixture and the inside area with the Flesh mixture. Apply the Flesh Shadow mixture inside the ear and blend toward the face; also apply it behind the ear and blend toward the back of the head, Paint the outer ear with the Pink mixture. Blend with a clean, towel-dried brush, Let dry. Touch up areas on the face by covering them with Clearblend and adding the colors. Blend them into the wet Clearblend as needed. Let dry ) Add the Eyebrow and Mouth Paint light, tiny hair strokes with the no, 2 liner and the Tan mixture to indicate a faint eyebrow: Shadow the mouth with the Tan mixture. Drawa few tiny, thin eyelashes with a no. 2, liner and a watery dark brown mixture of Bumt Umber and Ultramarine Blue. Create and Highlight the Hair
